100 Years Ago African-Americans Marched Down 5th Avenue to Declare That Black Lives Matter (tags)

On the afternoon of Saturday, July 28, 1917, nearly 10,000 African-Americans marched down Fifth Avenue, in silence, to protest racial violence and white supremacy in the United States. New York City, and the nation, had never before witnessed such a remarkable scene. The “Silent Protest Parade,” as it came to be known, was the first mass African-American demonstration of its kind and marked a watershed moment in the history of the civil rights movement. As I have written in my book “Torchbearers of Democracy,” African-Americans during the World War I era challenged racism both abroad and at home. In taking to the streets to dramatize the brutal treatment of black people, the participants of the “Silent Protest Parade” indicted the United States as an unjust nation.

July 2016 Honduras coup news update (tags)

July 2016 in Honduras. Yet another assassination against a woman who organised against megadam projects. A gun-in-the-head threat against a youth who already suffer an extremely painful history of persecution for forming part of a community of resistance at Rio Blanco against the Agua Zarca – DESA dam – which in collusion with army and police is responsible for killing Bertha Caceres this March 2016. Massive repression and eviction against a national uni students' occupation that involved charging 75 students – some suffered arrest and were detained for over 24 hours while others suffered the anxiety of capture orders having been issued against them. Break in and information theft against activist organisation Movimiento Amplio por la Dignidad y Justicia and critical press El Libertador. For details of all this and more, see below

Snake Valley Festival in Baker NV fights SNWA ‘Water Grab’ (tags)

The annual Snake Valley Festival held in Baker, NV featured signs focusing on protecting local aquifers from the Southern Nevada Water Authority's proposed pipeline to Las Vegas. Residents of the Snake and Spring Valleys are trying to raise awareness that if the SNWA pipeline is built the water beneath their feet will be taken to Las Vegas for the benefit of golf courses, fountains and other unsustainable development. Entire spring fed ecosystems will collapse and species like the spring snail risk extinction. Public comment sessions will be held throughout Nevada in the coming few weeks to address the concerns about aquifer depletion by the SNWA pipeline.

Sigamos resistiendo.

Every July 4, the descendents of the settlers who appropriated these lands and the oppressed they have assimilated celebrate that conquest. They always seem to set up checkpoints around this time, too, as if to remind us who is not "American": the poor, the migrant, the latino/a, the African-American, the disabled, the young, the LGBT community. This violation of basic dignity, like all forms of conquest, is an attempt to place people into a category and, if possible, commodify them. Keep up the resistance.

The La Naval De Manila, 1646 (tags)

For Filipino-Americans who are not religious and those who want to know about the “ La Naval De Manila”, we refer to when Spain dueled the Netherlands in the World Cup last July 10, 2010 in South Africa,we have to tell the story of the Battle in Manila Bay in 1646. This is not to glorify our colonial legacy as some Filipino Americans do in their PCN Nights, but this is also to honor the prowess of Filipino seamen who manned the Spanish ships. Until today, the Philippines is the country in the world that sends a lot of seamen into the different oceans. This is also to add to the much glorified pirates story about the Carribean. Shame of Johnny Depp for not including the Filipino pirates and their battles in his films!.

The Lotus Festival Minus the Fireworks. And the Lotus (tags)

If you want an example on how the City and the Mayor of Los Angeles treats the Asian Americans just look at the Lotus Festival last July 10-11, 2010 in Echo Park. The Lotus Festival is taunted to be the Los Angeles’ annual tribute to cross-cultural Asian heritage. This year it reemerged in Echo Park this weekend after a one-year hiatus but still without one significant participant — the lotuses. What Kind of Tribute? The 32-year-old festival has grown over the years from a modest one-day event to a weekend-long extravaganza that has attracted as many as 150,000 people. This year, organizers said they expected roughly 30,000 visitors. Formerly the City of Los Angeles is responsible for the Festival started by API non-profits. But last year it was canceled. They say due to lack of funds and the city's budget problems. But the question asked is that why did the city did not cancel the CInco De Mayo or the Broadway Festival? IS there money for Latinos but not for Asians.?

"This is because, for the IAPA, there was no coup. Its July 14 statement said the democratically elected Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was simply “stood down” — not kidnapped and dumped in a different country by balaclava-clad soldiers. And if anyone can recognise a dictatorship, it is the IAPA. After all, as it points out, the IAPA has been fighting off dictatorships “for a long time” — in the form of the Chavez administration. Ironically, the only time in Venezuela that a TV channel was taken off air, constitutional rights suspended, and journalists arrested and assaulted since Chavez’s 1998 election was during the two days when he was removed from power in a short-lived coup in April 2002. The worst nuclear accident in U.S. history: July 16, 1979, Navajo Reservation (tags)

July 16th, 2009, marked the 30th anniversary of the worst nuclear accident in U.S. history, when, at 5:00 A.M., 1100 tons of uranium mining tailings, and 100 million gallons of radioactive water burst through United Nuclear's earthen dam, into the Rio Puerco, at a uranium mine in Church Rock, New Mexico, on the Navajo Reservation. Today, the Navajo Nation remains under toxic siege, by coal mining, uranium mining, and coal-fired power, even though an EPA doc already suggests that the entire reservation is a Superfund site. The Navajo Tribal Council, in 2005, passed a uranium mining ban, the Diné Natural Resources Protection Act, and thus won a Nuclear Free Future Award, but the ban has been under pressure since the day it was passed, and uranium mining claims now surround the Navajo Reservation like an advancing army.

Last Call for PAPEL's Summer School Program (tags)

With the budget cuts to our summer program now in effect, and with reports by community members of acts of vandalism throughout the different communities in Los Angeles by young children who should otherwise be in school, one community group is ready to take over what the LAUSD failed to do: save our kids!

The Alliance-Philippines (AJLPP) based in the United States, and the Filipino-American Community expressed outrage over the series of bombing in the Southern Philippines. The AJLPP express grave concern that the July 5-6 bombings in Mindanao may spread to the other urban centers like Manila. We squarely lay the blame to the US-Arroyo regime and her subalterns in the military who may be behind these barbaric bombings. This is the same scenario staged by the US-Marcos regime when it declared martial law in 1972. Although the perpetrators like to appear that the targets of the bombings are Catholic Cathedrals, Christian population centers and points to the MILF, Abu Sayyaff (ASG) or JI-Al Queda, the Filipino people suspects that the military is behind the bombings as elucidated by ISAFP Sgt. Vidal Doble.

The Alliance-Philippines (AJLPP) based in the United States, adds its voice to the world’s condemnation of the military coup in Honduras that forcibly removed its democratically elected president Manuel Zelaya, Despite people’s protest, the military blocked the return of Zelaya and pounced on the more than 500,000 Hondurenos who rallied for his return. The military blocked the airport and forced Zelaya’s plane to Nicaragua last Sunday, July 5.

The progressive sector of the US labor movement marked July 5, 1934 - a day striking labor unions called "Bloody Thursday" - a turning point in the history of working people on the West Coast. On that day, strikes, riots, tear gas and armed troops on the San Francisco waterfront 1934 strike still had an impact that is still felt to this day. "I think it is still relevant to the Bay Area," said Kevin Starr, the pre-eminent historian of California who wrote about the strike in "Endangered Dreams," a history of California in the Great Depression.

The Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV), an alliance of veterans, students, youth and community advocates calls on all Filipinos, Filipino Americans and allies to write to Speaker of the House Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi and 245 congresspersons to discuss and pass the equity bill, HB 760 pending before the lower house of the US Congress, NOW! Last July 18 and 19, during the emergency conference of the JFAV ,Filipino veterans groups like PAVA-SC, SGS and UFAV with the Washington ACFV we decided to ask for a vote on th HR 760 on the floor of the US Congress. This is after a long wait and the promise of Speaker Pelosi that " if we got 290 votes she will put the bill on the floor." We feel that at most we have 220 votes to pass the bill. Waiting for 290 will just delay the bill to eternity. For four times, Congressman Bob Filner and Pelosi promised to pass the bill for the last two years to no avail. Please email, write them letters and call or fax their offices for them to act on the bill ASAP. The US Congress is ending its session by August 31. Remember its election time this year. Let not the elections sidetrack our advocacy for our veterans.

Support the Caravan to Cuba End the Blockade (tags)

The US blockade of Cuba causes shortages of food, medicine and other important supplies for eleven million people. The blockade is an immoral policy that uses hunger and disease as political weapons. In November 2005 the countries in the United Nations General Assembly once again voted overwhelmingly (182-4) to call for the end of the blockade. A month later Condoleza Rice responded by stating that the Bush administration intends to intensify the blockade still further and is working on a package of new measure to be announced in May 2006. US policy towards Cuba is totally isolated internationally, increasingly discredited domestically and subject to many challenges from within Congress.

"Two days before the London subway bombings, Fed-Master Alan Greenspan flushed nearly $40 billion in liquidity into financial markets. The sudden activity was an astonishing departure from the current policy of tightening interest rates to stifle inflation. The Chairman has not explained his erratic behavior, but there’s growing speculation that Greenspan may have had information about the likelihood of terrorist attacks and decided to “preemptively” head-off a run on the markets."
