The war must be ended as soon as possible (tags)

From the Western side, Russia, as a collapsed superpower, was not really taken seriously from the beginning. Symptomatic is the statement, repeated to this day, that "we", the West, won the Cold War. A Cold War is only really over when both sides can feel like winners.

The winter 2016 Anti-Mall was in solidarity with Stop the Dakota Pipeline and Buy Back the Farm! (and there were multiple ways for guests to support them). Clemency for Leonard Peltier was also promoted. And as always, the Anti-Mall was a chance for shoppers to put their money into the activist-artist community and practice sustainable living (e.g., repairing more and throwing away less).

Liberated Political Prisoner Sekou Odinga Speaks Out (tags)

Wednesday, February 10, 2016

IRVINE - In an unassuming classroom somewhere on the UCI campus, about 80 people, most of them students, gathered to hear the words of the recently-released Black Liberation Army prisoner Sekou Odinga, imprisoned for 33 years for his role in the 1979 emancipation of BLA soldier Assata Shakur.

Odinga is on tour speaking to students and community members, not only to tell his story, but also to encourage others to work to free US-held political prisoners and prisoners of war. This Wednesday's lecture was just one of a series that included colleges in Los Angeles, Orange County, and Santa Barbara, as well a presentation to the community at the South Central Library on Saturday.

The presentation on Wednesday was preceded by a video about political prisoners from the Black Liberation Struggle, and then some words from a professor.

Then Odinga took the mic.

Vigil for O'Day, Helen, Barry, and Carol-Ann Short, killed by racist terrorists in Fontana (tags)

January 23, 2016

FONTANA - A group of about 20 Fontana residents and local activists gathered yesterday evening outside of Randall Pepper Elementary School to commemorate the 1945 firebombing of the house owned by O'Day Short, an African-American targeted for racist violence for challenging white supremacy in the segregated city by daring to purchase a house on the south side of Baseline Avenue. Short, his wife Helen, and their two children Barry and Carol-Ann were all killed as a result of the December 16, 1945 firebombing. The incident, when eventually investigated, and even then only superficially, never led to any arrest or prosecution of any suspect, despite evidence pointing to death threats from the white real estate agent who sold the property and two white deputies of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.1 The vigil lasted about an hour-and-a-half, and featured words from the attendees, political discussion, and prayer.

The Sacrificial Lambs, the Innocent; Those That Got Caught In the Middle (tags)

The reason we as Americans are okay with giving a certain portion of our hard earned dollars towards foreign aid, is that we want to help those in need. There are certainly people around the world that need help financially, and we have all seen and read the stories. It's important to remember that we are blessed and fortunate to live in this great nation of ours. There are many more less than fortunate people living far below the standard of those in a Western nation, than those living at that level or even close to it. We often forget, but when the time comes, we are compassionate - most of us anyway.

Reroute It (tags)

There are all manner of things that get done with our tax payer cash. Countless. If we learned of them all just today, most voters would probably demand to elect entirely new representatives from entirely new parties. If the cable news network’s decided each to dedicate a full day to listing all the things they went to, each taking a separate day in successive order, there would be hell to pay. Just think of the things we know about that have had us so upset since 2003.

Why Do They Like Children? (tags)

Whenever we hear about sexual predators in our society we, desire to take action and hunt them, bring them to justice and get them off the streets. On the news often we hear of rings of such people getting busted. Sometimes it's the internet and child pornographers, etc. Sometimes it's closer to home. Either way, we're glad they're busted, exposed and off the streets. We consider that a high priority for law enforcement, wouldn't you agree? The safety, welfare and protection of our kids comes first and foremost, prior to anything else. We feel it in the pit of our stomachs, instinctively, whether we have kids or we don't, we must make them safe.

Praying To God for Help with Satan's Work (tags)

There are all kinds of reasons that people call upon their God for help. Often the best are for those inner reasons that are needed to help us with personal matters like work, our children, our loved ones, our health and the many basic decent things in life that from time to time can benefit from a little blind faith. We don't all believe in a God or a higher power and more and more of us believe this is about it, feeling you're born, you die - that's a that. Though many believe it's just an “opiate for the masses,” I feel that just because I don't believe in another's view, there is no harm, and in fact I've personally seen how it can be very helpful to people struggling with things like addictions, etc, though I never had that issue myself.

It's a Business (pt 2) (tags)

Money can so easily change circumstances. Just a little bit can help ease the stress of worrying about how the rent or mortgage will be paid on any given month. A small amount extra can make the difference between getting your kid what they need for school or not, like a new or even used computer or some school clothes. With just a few extra in the way of cash, there may not have to be the monthly juggling act of figuring which bills to pay and which to put off. And making up such seemingly miniscule increments of ground regarding getting current on bills and/or debt can really help take a load off a person's mind, if only until the next paycheck. Most of us have been there, and if not probably will at some point or another in life.

Forced Regression (tags)

People navigating unusually trying circumstances often need to dig deep to come up with responses and solutions to those predicaments that are equally unconventional, in order to effectively navigate those circumstances. There are so many ways we can be tried in life, and not one of us experiences the exact same test, or experiences a duplicate test exactly the same way another person’s does. Individual and singular, there will always be something peculiar to who we are that is introduced into everything we do. Dealing with adversity is no different, and it can bring about new responses to situations many others have previously been through, due to our uniqueness as individuals.

How Is All That In The Interest Of US Taxpayers? (tags)

Our democracy here in America has brought many positive things. It has brought positive things for Americans and for people living abroad. It has inspired others to try and have a more equal and free system of government in their own nations. It has inspired the best and the brightest from other nations to come to our nation seeking a better life for themselves, thus contributing something to their lives and to our nation. Positive things no doubt.

Is There A Way You Can Please Get Hurt? (tags)

For anyone going through harassment, it can be the most isolating and trying experience. If sustained for long enough, it has a way of driving home the point that when it comes down to it in this world we come in alone and go out alone. Even those we consider to be the best of friends may make a swift exit if the heat and pressure get intense enough. It will test what you're made of without a doubt.

When Everyday Russians Knew the Communists Were Failing (tags)

Growing up my parents kept people from all different ethnicities, races, religions, backgrounds, etc as friends. They tried not to discriminate, as they didn't want others to discriminate against them or their children. They had friends from Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, South America and of course America. They allowed people into their home from different backgrounds and were allowed into the homes of others. On the street we lived we were the first non-all white family; my mom being British, my dad being from India and our neighborhood predominantly Sicilian.

Ed’s Aren't As Powerful As You Might Think They Are (tags)

When I was a student at the University of Connecticut between the years of 2003 and 2006 I had the opportunity to view an aspect of the way our tax dollars get spent up close and personal. I saw this, though I wasn't meant to, and the way things were to unfold, there certainly couldn't have been any script, none that got adhered to anyway. Like anyone else, I got upset about certain things I was to see with regards to where my tax dollars went from time to time if I saw something on the news. Up until that point though, it was never enough to pinpoint one specific thing and connect it to tax dollars. But while at the University of Connecticut, I learned just how our dollars can be burned up uselessly without a care and how people on the taxpayer dime can take advantage of the system, responsibility, position and money they've been granted.

What We Want Them to Say, What They Want Them to Do (tags)

Money is a strong pull, there can be no denying that. There are few people that can resist its lure. I don't refer to money to purchase the basic necessities; there is almost no other way to get those in the world we live. I mean beyond that – after people have the necessities taken care of. The draw of a little more comfort, convenience or even luxury that only money can provide causes people to move towards the cash before they even know they've taken the steps. It's part of being human.

Entitled To No Blowback (tags)

The notions that we need to be more aware of how our tax dollars are spent and that we should have more power and control over expenditures where taxes are concerned, have become increasingly popular in recent years. This is especially true since the onset of the recession and the disastrous dual wars that were, up until just recently, paid for out of taxes despite the fact Iraq turned out to be such a billion dollar mess. The idea we shouldn't spend willy nilly and should have more accountability makes sense and one wonders what caused us to so easily take our eye off the ball regarding this. It's regarded as a Republican or conservative value, but Democrats have been incensed by the way stimulus dollars were doled out and are just as concerned about financial accountability, though they may have different ideas about how the money gets spent.

Will Rodriguez-Kennedy: Queer Republican Leader Becomes Democrat (tags)

In a dramatic scene at the February 23 meeting of San Diego Democrats for Equality, former San Diego County Log Cabin Republican Club president Will Rodriguez-Kennedy re-enacted his decision to switch parties and become a Democrat. His reason: he's not only tired of Republican Queer-bashing, he's put off by the hypocrisy of openly Queer San Diego Mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio, who has pandered to anti-Queer prejudices to get endorsements from the San Diego County Republican Central Committee and has taken money from donors to the anti-Queer Proposition 8.

Trump Cards, Fig Leafs and Ludicrous Insinuations (tags)

For people going through harassment and discrimination within a structured environment like a job, school, religious organization, etc it can be a nerve wracking experience. This is especially true at first, as the person being harassed will feel as if they are suddenly being treated in a way they didn't expect. It can feel harsh and emotionally jarring. There can be stress caused not only by the harassing and discriminatory actions themselves, but also by the psychological toll. By emotional toll I mean the worrying, the stressing over what happened and the emotional toll caused by being unsure about what will come next.

Mushy Center (tags)

In politics the tendency for candidates to move to the center when things get tough for them has become increasingly popular. The move helps them to side step and deflect heat coming at them from things that they have done or that have been done to them causing their popularity to wane. It also can appease a segment of folks that typically are not their constituency when members of their own base are looking at them unfavorably in hopes of making up lost ground regarding supporters. Come election time this can be especially important as it can help garner support. However, this still requires strong support from at least most of your base, and when they are fed up with a politician it is usually a good idea to get them behind that person to have not only guaranteed votes, but so as to look as if you are who you say you are. Bizarre schizophrenic personality shifts that try and say “I am no longer the person I was just four years ago” can seem – off.

Proof Is What Counts (tags)

Politicians have a tendency to make promise upon promise come election time, and that's to be expected. They are competing with one another and that competition brings about the need to discuss those things they would like to come to pass as though they already have come to pass. It seems to bring about the need to discuss what they most wanted to happen as if it actually had occurred, whether it has or not. The competition tends to bring about the need to blame the other person instead of confessing some of your own faults.

Parker Jaques: Bisexual, Binary and Proud! (tags)

Parker Jaques isn't the usual sort of interviewee who gets featured in a Queer publication. That's why I wanted to interview him for the cover story in the September 2011 Zenger's Newsmagazine. He doesn't have a traumatic, breast-beating coming-out story to tell. He wasn't Queer-bashed in school because his mother encouraged him to fight back if anyone tried it. He's proud of his identity not only as a Bisexual but as a gender-identified male, and he has such withering contempt for people (like the August 2011 Zenger's cover person, Red) who call themselves "non-binary" -- neither male nor female -- that once we started discussing that subject it was hard to get him to talk about anything else. That's why I call him "Bisexual, Binary and Proud!"

When Getting Outpaced, Just Say We Won (tags)

If you ever find yourself in a position where you are targeted for harassment at your workplace, school or any other place and choose to stick things out, it may be helpful at times to read what others have to say about their experiences; their stories and the like. No matter how seemingly similar or dissimilar they may or may not appear at first, listen to or read it if possible. There may be bits and pieces to connect with or integrate into your own survival toolbox and sets of strategies for survival. They may not display immediately obvious applications to your situation, but later on could open up as things that are helpful with regards to implementing towards your own survival experience.

RED: "Non-Binary" Person Rejects Male/Female Gender Duality (tags)

Red, who works at San Diego's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center, identifies themselves as non-binary: that is, neither male nor female but somewhere in a "cloud" of genders that rejects the idea that there are only two human gender identities, male and female. They gave an interview for the August 2011 Zenger's Newsmagazine in which they (you refer to a non-binary person as "they," "them" or "theirs" even if you're only referencing one individual) explained these new, unfamiliar concepts of gender that are beyond the experience of most people, including most Transgender people. Red and Zenger's editor/publisher Mark Gabrish Conlan discussed how both gender identity and sexual orientation are far more complex and fluid than either the straight or the Queer mainstream is willing to acknowledge.

Michael Sol: Queer Leatherman Explores Intimacy and Sadism (tags)

Michael Sol, Leatherman extraordinaire and candidate for Mr. Los Angeles Leather this weekend (March 26-27), is giving a demonstration of the Japanese rope bondage art, shibari, at the Joyce Beers Community Center, Vermont Street between Terra and Aladdin Restaurants in Hillcrest, Friday, April 1 at 7 p.m. at an event sponsored by the San Diego League of Gentlemen. In this interview, published in the April 2011 issue of Zenger's Newsmagazine, Sol talks extensively about his interests in Leather and so-called "edge play," and the distinction he draws between romantic intimacy and power exchanges. He also discusses the thin line between exercise and martial art, and between consensual S/M and the kinds of torture practiced on unwilling victims in places like Abu Ghraib.

Joshua Napier: Singer, Songwriter, Queer Activist Brings Passion to His Music (tags)

The first thing you’ll notice when you hear Joshua Napier sing is the sheer emotion and passion he projects with his music. Napier sings with an edgy intensity that makes you identify with him and his songs. What’s more, though he’s a political activist and writes topical songs, he has the knack of the best activist songwriters of combining the personal with the political and creating pieces that reflect his beliefs instead of hitting you over the head with them. Napier is equally passionate off-stage. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio and raised by a single mother, he was out as Gay in high school. One of the reasons he came to San Diego was to find an activist community with which he could work. Active as the membership chair of the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality (S.A.M.E.), he recently left that group’s board to join the board of Activist San Diego (ASD) because he wanted to work with a group that isn’t just focused on Queer issues. Catch him wherever you can — at fundraisers, coffeehouse gigs or the “Redfest” event of politically aware music he’s planning for this summer.

There is a hope through diversity we will see a new vision and even direction arise.

The polls and predictions from CNN, FOX, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, NBC, the New York Times, Washington Post and the list goes on, all predict the House will switch hands to GOP control, and the Senate, they say, may very well do the same.

We hope the conference will inform and inspire new comrades to join the struggle in defense of the Earth—along with eating good food and doing a bunch of hootin’ and hollerin’!

His speech was full of withering scorn not only for President Obama but also for progressives who supported him in the campaign and still believe in his good intentions.

Walter G. Meyer: Queer Youth Novel “Rounding Third” Is About More than Baseball (tags)

Queer author Walter G.Meyer has written a remarkable first novel, “Rounding Third.” At base it's a story of two middle American Gay teens who meet each other on the high-school baseball team in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. But it’s also an intensely moving, often heart-rending tale of the terror under which Queer youth still grow up as well as the often surprising sources of support they find as they struggle with their identities. And, lest readers think this is a problem that we’ve grown beyond as a society, Meyer inserts modern communications technology — the Internet, cell phones, texting and iPods — to make sure readers know these are live issues in 2010 and not dimly remembered horrors of the 1950’s or 1970’s.

"The story of American money, which occupies a period of about three centuries, began when the early settlers in New England carried on their fur trade with the indians through the use of wampum, which had been fashioned from mussel shells in the form of beads. Beaver skins, wampum, and in Virginia, tobacco, soon became the common accepted media of exchange for all other available commodities. The immigrants, in fact, had little use for coined money at first, but when traders arrived from foreign lands, coins were usually demanded in payment for goods." Author Darrel Ray Lectures on “God Virus” (tags)

It’s not every atheist author who begins a lecture to promote his book with a bit of a fire-breathing Fundamentalist Christian sermon on the nature and ubiquity of human sin and the need to appeal to the Holy Spirit to be cleansed of it. But that’s what Darrel W. Ray did at the San Diego Public Library September 19 in an appearance sponsored by the Humanist Association of San Diego (HASD). A former believer, Ray discussed the total lack of logic in religious appeals and the way religions mimic the behavior of germs in spreading from person to person, use classic hypnotic techniques in their services, and inculcate guilt in their believers — especially about sex. Ray also mentioned ways rationalists can talk to belivers without immediately putting them on the defensive, and offered help for those who are — in his words — “recovering from religion.”

A recurring theme of his talk was the importance of movements (in contrast with the common emphasis on leadership) in bringing about social change, and his exhortation was that we in the audience participate in those movements.

Marx for dummies (tags)

It’ no accident that many people are finding a rekindled interest in the writings of Karl Marx; the international assault of workers wages and benefits, continued warfare, and economic instability in general are causing a revival of the buried and slandered ideas of Marxism. Many of these concepts offer tremendous insight about the origins and workings of capitalism, and thus the causes of many of society’s current problems. Needless to say, involved are immense implications for anybody interested in becoming an activist. A “Marxist” is someone who accepts some of the key points about history and society first explained by Karl Marx and Fredrick Engels, and elaborated further by the writings of Lenin, Trotsky, and many others (Stalin, Mao, etc are Marxists in name only). Unfortunately, one cannot learn about these ideas by going to college, aside from the many biased and bastardized versions of the subject. The following is a brief explanation of some of the more important concepts of Marxism.

Whatever he is doing, I saw a chance to not only possibly intervene directly into someone who is attempting to justify and rationalize his beliefs, but also share (and seek input) this with people like yourself whom may be inspired in your own activity.

Iraq: Turmoil Among the Warmakers, Challenge For the People (tags)

The war in Iraq, to understate the case, is not going well for the U.S. imperialists. The resistance to the U.S. occupation within Iraq has spread and grown more capable. The conflicts between the many different political, ethnic and class forces within Iraq show little sign of resolution, and the puppet Iraqi army is still not able to fight on its own. In response, the U.S. has escalated its tactics of wholesale terror directed against the Sunni Muslim population as a whole, which is the main (though not the only) base of the insurgency. Making all this worse--from the imperialist standpoint, that is--is the increasingly widespread and sharp sentiment against the war within the U.S. itself. And interplaying with that is a growing disaffection and anger within the army itself.

The Coming Civil War and Repolarization for Revolution in the Present Era (tags)

Just to be clear, I didn't choose this title lightly or facetiously, but in all seriousness. In speaking to "a coming civil war" I am "drawing inspiration" from Newt Gingrich (the prominent Republican politician who was formerly the Speaker of the House of Representatives), who has made the observation that what's happening now in the electoral arena and the broader things that it reflects in U.S. society is analogous to what was going on in the U.S. in the 1840s and the 1850s, and that this isn't something that will—I'm paraphrasing, but this is the essence—this isn't something that will go away. It will only be decided when one side or the other wins out.

Intellectual Ferment in the Party (tags)

QUESTION : I was just wondering if you could speak a little bit to how--while not throwing out democratic centralism or something like that--how do you have the party in the mix of all of these ideas? You went to China and you talked to these people around how China was opening up to the West and saying Marcos was a great leader and this, that and the other, and you were asking these people in the Chinese party and they didn't have the answers. And part of it is: did those people not have the answers, or did they have some questions on it, but they were more debating it internally and they couldn't talk to you about it? How can you have the mix of people being able to be in the midst of all the questions that are going on, intellectually--political questions, but also in the ideological realm--without breaking democratic centralism? How do you have people in the mix of that, being able to engage it and even in some ways go off in the wrong direction in order to eventually get to the right direction, but then not have that cause a splintering effect. You know?

QUOTE America had to start a war against terror. Why? Fallacy #1. We didn’t start the war. In 1996 Osama bin Laden declared jihad against America. He asked Muslims worldwide to kill anything American. Then 15 hijackers landed planes in the middle of New York City, Washington and Pennsylvania. They started the war, we’re just going to see it’s finished.

Letter of Solidarity: There are some things all Americans can agree on (tags)

Americans are deeply divided on the issue of the war in Iraq. Some of us agree with our military's invasion and some do not. I am adamantly against the war but my friend Thad thinks the problem is with some of the specific things are government does, such as impose sanctions and secretly target civilians. Any American, if you ask him or her, will say that he or she does not want innocent civilians to die or suffer. Any American will also say that he or she doesn't want our troops to suffer needlessly. In light of this fact, my friend and I composed a letter to President Bush in an effort to unify on our nation on common ground.
