2011-04-11 10:16 PM This is an idea for boosting the turnout for the immigration march on May first. There may be a few different ones due to the annual realignments and fights between sectarians, but all that matters is that people show up in huge numbers! (text/plain)

Now Stephane Hessel has another reason for outrage, though at 94 he may be exempt from personal ambition and he always has been selfless, and that is the chance to also have a bestseller in the US. (image/jpeg)

Sexual Prey in the Saudi Jungle
Walden Bello*
2011-01-28 6:20 PM
He was an officer in the Saudi Royal Navy assigned to the strategic Saudi base of Jubail in the Persian Gulf. She was a single mom from Mindanao, in the Philippines, who saw, like so many others, employment in Saudi Arabia as a route out of poverty. When he picked her up at the Dammam International Airport in June, little did she know she was entering, not a brighter chapter of her life but a chamber of horrors from which she would be liberated only after six long months. Zenger’s vs. Fox on “Undocumented” vs. “Illegal” Immigrants
Leo E. Laurence, J.D.
2011-01-23 6:24 PM
Does it look to you like he’s wearing a dress? That’s just one of the loonier accusations leveled against Zenger’s Newsmagazine associate editor Leo E. Laurence, J.D., shown being made up for one of his two recent appearances on Fox News. He was invited on “Fox and Friends” and “The O’Reilly Factor” to discuss his campaign to get the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) to recommend that immigrants in the U.S. without official papers be referred to as “undocumented” rather than “illegal.” What he got was a firestorm of bigoted, prejudiced and frequently ad hominem attacks from members of Fox’s core Right-wing audience; “idiot” was actually one of the less mean things he was called in the hundreds of e-mails that flooded in to his accounts after the shows. The Migrant Condition
Walden Bello
2010-10-22 3:32 AM When I was recently named chairman of the Committee on Overseas Workers’ Affairs of the House of Representatives of the Philippines, I was approached by members of the press for my views on migrant labor. I remembered a speech I delivered last year at the Global Forum for Migration and Development in Athens, Greece. The thrust of the speech was that migrants’ rights have to be addressed on two fronts: ending the neoliberal policies that are responsible for creating poverty in their home countries, thus forcing them to emigrate, and demanding that they are given full rights in their host countries. Gamu Nhengu, an 18-year-old promising singer from Zimbabwe who took part in this year’s edition of “X Factor” is in danger of being deported back to her home country. If she were to be deported back to Zimbabwe with her mother she would find herself in a society where women are discriminated against and humiliated – even more so, seeing that Gamu is young, pretty and by now famous. Arizona Republic endorses Libertarian Andrea Garcia over racist Russell Pearce
Libertarian Andrea Garcia
2010-10-02 7:22 AM This must be a mistake!!! The Republic endorses Libertarian Andrea Garcia over racist, police state thug Russell Pearce in the Mesa Senate race!!!! You know Russell Pearce, he is the police state tyrant that created Arizona's racist SB 1070 law. Russell Pearce is also an ex-cop who thinks marijuana smokers should be executed, while Andrea wants to legalize drugs. Hey Andrea, have you been sneaking around doing something we don't know about????
On the other hand sometimes the Republic makes a mistake and actually gets it right. (text/html + 3 comments)
