Cindy Sheehan Speaks at Reception in San Diego
For four years, from her emergence as an anti-war activist following the death of her son Casey in combat in Iraq, Cindy Sheehan was a hero among liberals and Democrats for her attempts to hold then-President George W. Bush to account for starting the Iraq war and taking her son's life in vain. Then she ran for Congress against Democratic icon Nancy Pelosi and made it clear she held both major parties responsible for the war and the rest of America's ills. Now she's Roseanne Barr's running mate in the Peace and Freedom Party's Presidential campaign, running on a socialist platform that says education, housing and health care are human rights. Occupy the Military Industrial Complex (report back)
A series of demonstrations drew attention to one of the biggest (and least-discussed) welfare programs: the Military Industrial Complex. Although Boeing was the main target, demonstrations also occurred in front of Northrop Grumman and Raytheon. By late afternoon, there were about 50 participants. That number increased to approximately 75 by early evening. Most response from vehicular traffic seemed positive. (image/jpeg + 6 comments)

text Veteran Chicano activist's home raided by agencies Ernesto Arce 2012-05-17 8:25 AM
A veteran Los Angeles Chicano activist is speaking out today after what he says was a joint Sheriff’s Department and FBI raid on his Alhambra home on Tuesday morning. Carlos Montes is one of the original Brown Berets who was a key leader of the Chicano Power movement of the 1960’s and 1970s. He says his current activism in the immigrant rights and international workers solidarity movement has put him back in the crosshairs of federal agents. Montes was arrested in his home during a pre-dawn raid in which authorities confiscated countless photos, documents and even two kaffiyehs. He says the authorities have charged him with illegal possession of a firearm. Pacifica’s Ernesto Arce visited Montes at his home today. He files this report from Los Angeles. (text/plain)

March 19 Anti-War Protesters Target Obama
The annual anti-war demonstration sponsored by the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice (SDCPJ) in mid-March had a markedly different tone this year from the actions in 2009 and 2010. Then the protesters and rally speakers had soft-pedaled criticism of President Obama, still holding out hope that he would fulfill his campaign promise to end the U.S. occupation of Iraq and would come to realize that the war in Afghanistan — already America’s longest-lasting combat — was unwinnable and would withdraw there, too. Instead, Obama chose the eighth anniversary of former President George W. Bush’s attack on Iraq to launch U.S. air raids on Libya, thereby getting us involved in a third war against a Muslim country — and one young man at the rally summed up the attitude of most of the 300 people there by wearing a T-shirt with the famous Shepard Fairey image of Obama, and under it the words “War Criminal.” (image/jpeg)

text Anti-Nuclear Peace Marches on March 19 Peacenik 2011-03-19 3:14 AM
On this 8th anniversary of the illegal US invasion and occupation of Iraq in its agenda of blood for oil wars to maximize profits, we are also witnessing another profiteering horror, that of a nuclear holocaust caused by the breakdown of nuclear power in the face of earthquakes and tsunamis. Go to the nearest peace march on March 19 to support solar, wind and tidal power for clean, safe, renewable energy, for an end to blood for oil wars and an end to the whole deadly private profit system. text Some notes and observations on the insurrection in Egypt General Joe 2011-01-30 7:53 PM
"The US is attempting to appear to support “democratic rights.” Mubarak will leave and the US will trumpet a great “victory for democracy and the Egyptian people.” If the masses are fooled by this, little will change. It is the current ruling clique that must be deposed from power. And this is the deepest desire of the Egyptian nation. The U.S. has chosen Omar Suleiman to be there’re next strong man and faithful servant in Egypt. In all likelyhood, the Egyptian people will reject this cynical move." (text/plain)

text Wikileaks SEP-ISSE Public Meetings General Joe and friends 2011-01-09 4:13 PM
"The significance of the WikiLeaks exposures can be measured by the fact that the organization’s founder, Julian Assange, has faced death threats from US politicians and media figures as well as calls for his trial and execution. Assange is currently threatened with extradition to Sweden on trumped-up sex charges, while the Obama administration has labeled the WikiLeaks founder a "high-tech terrorist.” The attack on WikiLeaks and Assange poses a grave threat to democratic rights and to all those who seek to expose the crimes of the US government."
