Dear Radio Friend,

This week's show features stories from NHK Japan, Radio Havana Cuba, Sputnik Radio, and Radio Deutsche-Welle

From JAPAN- An Insight on the 73rd anniversary of the atomic bombs hitting Japan and the nuclear ban treaty proposed at the UN. US sanctions on Iran were reinstated this week, creating chaos for global automobile manufacturers who set up plants there. The EU is invoking a statute that protects EU countries from sanctions for doing business with Iran, allowing them to recover financial loses caused by the US. At the UN, N Korea stressed the need to build confidence with the US rather than being pressured by sanctions.

From CUBA- Citizens across Cuba have copies of the proposed new constitution and will give input at public hearings. 350 Palestinian youth continue to be held in Israeli prisons which do not meet international standards. A Viewpoint on the attempted assassination of democratically elected Venezuelan President Maduro- this happens at a time when right-wing forces, aided by foreign governments, want to open the door to US military intervention. Targeted assassination by drone has been made a global epidemic by the CIA and US military, and the global opinion is that US covert operatives were involved in the attempted murder. President Maduro has presented evidence and names of the perpetrators of the attack.

From RUSSIA- On his program called Going Underground, Afshin Ratannsi compared the assassination attempt on Maduro to the murder of Bishop Oscar Romero- former CIA head Pompeo, now Secretary of State, has clearly spoken in favor of regime change in Venezuela. The Guardian UK newspaper reported that the government was going to seek extradition for alleged perpetrators of the Novichok poisoning in England.

From GERMANY- As droughts, soaring temperatures, and huge fires (I live in Mendocino County CA) spread around the globe, have we passed the tipping point of climate change, and would the Paris Accord be enough to stop it? The EU is calling on companies to keep trading with Iran, and Germany has significantly changed its migration policy.

"You can't imagine all the pressure that is coming from Washington to ensure the failure of the efforts we have made during the last year to create a common strategy among OPEC and non-OPEC producers to stabilize the market and prices, these are almost war-like pressure on governments, on heads of state."

--Nicolas Maduro
