In his book, the author argues that America’s pursuit of a society of equals is dependent upon “protest and politics” and that political parties and partisanship are necessary to ensure a properly working democracy.
At the beginning, Prof. Wilentz quoted Reinhold Niebuhr "Statesmanship easily degenerates to opportunism and prophets should recognize they have a note of moral superiority." Manipulators make things very different. At the end, he said "The Almighty looks after children, drunks and the USA."
