History

The Dukhobor vegetarian sect was founded in Russia by followers of Leo Tolstoy. Some emigrated to Canada. Before 1917, the majority of Russians (Russian Orthodox Christians) ate no meat on certain holy days A vegetarian organization was founded in St Petersburg in 1901. Nine others followed. There were many vegetarian restaurants in many cities. There were vegetarian hospitals, vegetarian newspapers and magazines. Mahatma Gandhi said his ahimsa (nonviolence) was rekindled by Leo Tolstoy. http:/www.anc.org.za/ancdocs/history/people/gandhi/bhana.html. When a group of Russian followers of Sathya Sai Baba came to his ashram, one asked if fish could be eaten. Baba told them that (besides the ethics of nonkilling) the fish in the world were accumulating increasing radiation from illegal nuclear waste dumping.
