The internal and continual upheaval about national policies toward newcomers is taking a sharp turn in Mesoamerica or Central america. El Salvadorean nationals get Temporary Protected Status while Guatemalan travelers remain illegal in 9 times out of 10.Wheres the pope?
A key element in this debate happened in 2000 or 2001 in Guatemala and Los Angeles. If you like bananas you probably like to pick up a Chiquita bundle of semi-ripened bananas imported through ocean ports around the world. Guatemala had organizing going on in the areas that have traditionally produced something for the homeplace and something for profit in markets traditionally located in the U.S.A. and Europe. 23 organizers who spoke Spanish were threatened by thugs and were forced for their safety to move to the United States in the city of Los Angeles. They were welcomed by Immigration officials who granted them protection. This is hardly a recipe for the death squads of the 1980's and despair of today. yet, if we can protect our leaders other things will follow and we can better our families. Please support grass roots people in all coutries and all walks of life.
