Astra Taylor talked by video link from New York City about her book, The People’s Platform: Taking Back Power and Culture in the Digital Age, in which she examines the cultural evolution of the Internet. Ms. Taylor said that while at its inception the Internet was to be democratic and open, she sees it now as corporatized, targeting consumers with ads. Also, the start-up companies of the Internet’s early days had become among the most powerful companies in the world, leaving new startups with little room to thrive. She called for government intervention and new strategies to put people before profits on the Internet.
