I've been reading about it lately because of recent posts, and also read about it on this website a decade ago. The people into it seem to be caught up in a kind of group delusion. We've had long-lasting contrails for as long as I can remember. I was one of those kids who stared at the sky to see shapes in the clouds.

is it that some people don't have more important things to worry about? There are oil wells that pollute the environment up near USC. There is a battery plant in Vernon that's exhausting fine particles of lead into the air in Vernon. There's an increase in fracking around LA - and while I'm a little disinclined to think that it's a huge disaster - there are increased risks because of it.

While my primary interest is Arctic methane sources and release, something far more troubling has been found.

The Arctic Ocean: An Increasing CO2 Source: SWERUS-C3

Professor Leif Anderson, a marine chemist at the University of Gothenburg submitted the following on his blog on July 28, 2014. While he comments on the methane release he notes the fact that the Laptev Sea is acting as a CO2 source, and that thawing permafrost on the shallow sea floor was the cause.

“With five stations on two days there was a total of approximately 100 samples that we analyzed in order to evaluate the water masses flowing along the slope between the shallow Laptev Sea and the deep basin. When this work was finished, we sailed towards the east during the time that we stopped a few times for stations at about 50 meters depth.” (the area circled above)

“Now begins the interesting things happen with the chemistry. The oxygen concentration becomes low, near the ground (sea floor), a clear signal to the decomposition of organic materials. This also means that the carbon dioxide concentration is high. The most surprising is that the carbon dioxide concentration is also high in the surface water, so high that it is above the equilibrium level of the atmosphere. Thus carbon dioxide is leaking out of the sea in this area. Normally the sea under-saturated during the summer when växtpankton (plankton) bloom. The reason that it is over saturated is probably due to the supply of organic matter from land that is broken down to a greater extent than the phytoplankton bloom. This was something we observed during an expedition to the sea in 2008, but in areas closer to shore than where we are now.”

What makes this intriguing – and troubling, is that the charted path of SWERUS_C3 is no where near land, this is not likely decaying debris washed out to sea. the course seems to be what is thawing on or under the sea floor itself.

While we have concerns about CH4 leaking from the East Siberian and Laptev shelves, we may have to also contend with the longer term impacts of increased CO2 release.

Several massive methane blowholes that left craters in Siberia recently have left much of the scientific community scratching their heads, but the fact that methane is involved is extremely worrisome. One of the craters is 200 feet across, and appears bottomless. Russian scientists found extremely high concentrations of methane at the bottom of the first crater found.

In the atmosphere, methane is a greenhouse gas that, on a relatively short-term time scale, is far more destructive than carbon dioxide. It is 23 times as powerful as carbon dioxide per molecule on a 100-year timescale, 105 times more potent when it comes to heating the planet on a 20-year timescale - and the Arctic permafrost, onshore and off, is packed with the stuff.

NASA has already reported about the threat posed by the distinct possibility of a massive amount of methane being released from the Arctic - which holds five to six times the carbon equivalent of that humans have burned in our entire existence on Earth - along with the fact that most of this carbon is located in thaw-vulnerable top soils within 10 feet of the surface.

However, the NASA report was from June 2013. Now, researchers surveying the Arctic Ocean's seafloor are expressing even graver concerns over their findings, which include plumes of methane rising in bubbles from the sea floor.

Widely published climatologist Jason Box, who closely followed the research expedition, responded to what he saw with a tweet that quickly went viral: "If even a small fraction of Arctic sea floor carbon is released to the atmosphere, we're f'd."

Moving beneath the Arctic Ocean where methane hydrates - often described as methane gas surrounded by ice - exist, a March 2010 report in Science indicated that these cumulatively contain the equivalent of 1,000 to 10,000 gigatons of carbon. Compare this total to the 240 gigatons of carbon humanity has emitted into the atmosphere since the industrial revolution began.

This is why Box's abrupt and blunt statement is as prophetic as it is shocking, coming from a scientist of his caliber.

- first you deny it's happening at all, then when new data is posted covering a wide range of contributing factors (called positive feedbacks - there are over 30 of them now), you try to isolate a single feedback, post suspect data which doesn't even directly apply to the current situation, then PRETEND that strawman covers all the others - which have nothing to do with it.

as far as these new methane craters popping up IN AN AREA WHICH HAS NO VOLCANOS, they are only a small part of the picture, something new that's happening IN ADDITION TO all the other things..

scientists aren't sure what they mean or what's causing them, but as the above data says, they've measured huge amounts of METHANE in them.

methane is highly flammable - if there was any magma around :

1.) that's a different kind of methane - fossil methane

2.) the methane scientists are measuring is recently produced from the decay of organic matter

3.) the methane (from either source) would ignite from the magma and so there wouldn't BE huge amounts of it in the WATER (you can see water in the crater) and the air there around the craters

High methane concentrations have been showing up over Beaufort Sea over the past few days, as shown on the image below. This follows the recent high methane concentrations over the East Siberian Sea.

The persistent character of these very high methane concentrations over the Arctic Ocean indicates that methane has started to erupt from clathrates under the seabed, triggered by very warm water reaching the bottom of the Arctic Ocean.
