Global-warming debate shouldn’t exclude role of livestock

by Systemic Disorder Thursday, May. 23, 2013 at 7:00 AM

Regardless of what the actual total of livestock contribution to global warming, it is part of the problem and we ignore it at our collective peril.

The struggle to halt global warming ordinarily focuses on fossil fuel consumption and use, currently exemplified by the Alberta tar sands and the proposed Keystone XL pipeline to the Gulf of Mexico. It would be foolish to disregard that, but what if the rapidly expanding livestock industry has been overlooked as a major contributor to global warming?

A paper published in World Watch that provides a strong argument that animal agriculture is significantly undercounted as a contributor to global warming. What makes this study interesting is that, in contrast to unsupported claims about methane sometimes made by vegan and animal-rights activists, it grounds its arguments squarely on carbon dioxide.

The World Watch paper, authored by environmental scientists Robert Goodland and Jeff Anhang, concludes that livestock contributes 51 percent of annual greenhouse-gas emissions, and provocatively advocates substituting meat and dairy products with analogs as the fastest way to avoid the planet reaching a climatic tipping point. The paper argues that there is not enough time, nor sufficient political will, to make necessary changes in energy and transportation before irreversible climate changes are upon us.

The sources, and thus the solutions, to global warming constitute a legitimate debate.

Bell has not published any articles in peer-reviewed journals on the subject of climate.

Larry Bell was a speaker at the Heartland Institute, which has received over $67 million from ExxonMobil, the Koch Brothers and the conservative Scaife family foundations.

Heartland's president Joe Bast revealed at the end of the conference that the Institute has no plans for future ICCCs. This could be in part due to the defections of corporate sponsors following Heartland's unsuccessful Unabomber billboard campaign and the unintended release of their confidential documents.

talk about strawmen...

by Kinda like... Saturday, May. 25, 2013 at 12:02 PM

Are you again trying to link a known fact with your usual strawman?
Big surprise, not unlike the fervent, support you have for the entire 'global warming' hoax...
I also know you don't have *verified* raw data to support the entire scam through a cooling period, but lord do you have a crapload of bogus charts from the same ass-picked 'data' points.

"global warming", NASA, and imbeciles at large

by laughing man Wednesday, Jun. 19, 2013 at 8:36 PM

Imbeciles who push the party line about global warming get so many of their talking points from NASA, the UN, and various other alphabet agencies.

Here's a shining example of the stupidity that the shills fall over themselves waiting for:

http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2013/jun/HQ_13-187_Cassini_Earth_Photo.html

"While Earth will be only about a pixel in size from Cassini's vantage point 898 million (1.44 billion kilometers) away, the team is looking forward to giving the world a chance to see what their home looks like from Saturn," said Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif. "We hope you'll join us in waving at Saturn from Earth, so we can commemorate this special opportunity."

That's right, people. You are forced at threat of a gun and/or imprisonment to fund such a useless agency as NASA, who pays a salary to an incredible dimwit who says you need to wave.

It's all about dominating public space with FUD & lies - nothing else matters.

now, only NASA is second to albert gore

by crazy_inventor Thursday, Jun. 20, 2013 at 5:06 AM

in the teabagger's smear book..

and in other OT chatter, over the last few days I've set up a second relay for all 3 streams (because too heavy traffic was affecting the station feeds which are top priority since any gaps or pauses goes out over the air)

Set up & tested a Wi-Fi multicasting system, with a soft-AP on USB adaptor on XP (don't try that at home kiddies)

When anyone connects, DHCP assigns them an IP, and the streams _come to them_ as broadcast packets. They only need to open up VLC on the default multicast port (6000)

udp://@224.0.0.1:6000/

without connecting to anything, and the music plays.

I found this out by accident (broadcast to 192.169.1.255 becomes multicast 224.0.0.1 for anyone that connects)

The other streams are mentioned in the metadata as only ports, just as the over-the-air UDP stream decoder has it's metadata announce packet -

udp://@127.0.0.1:1236/

except the decoder sends to localhost..

The broadcast-to-multicast mapping occurs in the route table of the listener, I noticed after typing 'route print' at the command prompt (try it)

NASA: Arctic methane melt at "amazing levels"

Shock as retreat of Arctic sea ice releases deadly greenhouse gas

Russian research team astonished after finding ‘fountains’ of methane bubbling to surface.

Igor Semiletov, of the Far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that he has never before witnessed the scale and force of the methane being released from beneath the Arctic seabed.

“Earlier we found torch-like structures like this but they were only tens of metres in diameter. This is the first time that we’ve found continuous, powerful and impressive seeping structures, more than 1,000 metres in diameter. It’s amazing,” Dr Semiletov said. “I was most impressed by the sheer scale and high density of the plumes.

Before the start of the industrial era, atmospheric methane was about 700 parts per billion (number of molecules of the gas per billion molecules of dry air) Since 1750, it has increased 158%, mostly because of activities such as cattle-rearing, rice planting, fossil fuel exploitation and landfills.

Where could those figures have possibly come from? How could anyone have possibly measured methane levels in the atmosphere in the 1700's?

How damned stupid can you be, Hooper? I think that your zit medicine has royally fucked your brain.

Methane

by nobody Friday, Jun. 21, 2013 at 5:01 AM

I'd guess they're finding out ways to measure methane in frozen water.

I heard that civil war era buttons, metal ones with hollow centers, contained air that's been analyzed.

Also, NASA was a combination of the Army and Navy rocket programs. It was well funded during the cold war because it was a nonmilitary way to prove that we could dominate the skies. The idea being, of course, that we could also send a military device into the air and drop it anywhere on earth.

And the bears - yes, the numbers increased, because they were put on the endangered species list and killing them was made illegal. That doesn't mean that the ice isn't melting. The ice is melting, and bears decline along with their environment.

"I'd guess"

by laughing man Friday, Jun. 21, 2013 at 5:26 AM

You see, boys and girls?

The assclown doesn't know shit, but posts propaganda it found elsewhere, accepts it as gospel, and can't back it up.

It's a mental cripple in a mental ward who also claims, ala the Napoleon Complex, that it's a major domo in the Broadcasting world, all on a dying web site.

Global warming is a scam, and polar bears can swim, and IBOC equals noisy night-time hash that can't reach for 5 miles in daylight hours, kids. That's all you need to know.

METHANE!!

So...
Where's the methane extinction event we all can point to in order to establish geological strata that demonstrates that awful gas from Tweet/Yada's overlarge bunghole has ever posed any threat to life?
But the self fisting it gives keeps doing to promote this farce of a topic, is certainly using up the limited air available in the septic tank it calls home.
