Alexander/Mendoza: Seniors Give Voters a Choice in California Election

by Lynn Lomibao Friday, Oct. 26, 2012 at 12:13 PM

Maggie Phair, 83-years-old played an integral role in organizing the write-in campaign effort, and Ann Alexander, 88-years-old followed the campaign volunteers to assure that all the write-in petitions were completed and notarized. On Tuesday, the California Secretary of State contacted the Alexander/Mendoza campaign with the good news: “The petitions are certified and the campaign is qualified for write-in.”

Who would have imagined that two great grandmothers in their 80s would make it possible for Californians to vote for a socialist ticket in the upcoming November General Election? Well, 88-year-old Ann Alexander and 83-year-old Maggie Phair made that all possible. Ann Alexander is the mother of Stewart Alexander, the Presidential nominee for the Socialist Party USA, and Maggie Phair is a lifelong socialist and political activist.

With only days before the California deadline to qualify as a California Write-In candidate for president, Presidential candidate Stewart Alexander collected the necessary Presidential Elector petition signatures to qualify as a Write-In presidential candidate. The signatures had to be collected from registered California voters and be individually notarized.

Maggie Phair played an integral role in organizing the write-in campaign effort, and Ann Alexander followed the campaign volunteers to assure that all the write-in petitions were completed and notarized. On Tuesday, the California Secretary of State contacted the Alexander/Mendoza campaign with the good news: “The petitions are certified and the campaign is qualified for write-in.”

Stewart Alexander officially has ballot access and on the ballot in three states -- Ohio, Florida and Colorado -- and has write-in status in Alabama, Delaware, Indiana, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Michigan. The Alexander/Mendoza campaign is expecting to qualify for write-in for Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota and Alaska.

The Stewart Alexander/Alex Mendoza campaign gives California voters a true left alternative. Stewart Alexander says his campaign is about helping seniors in particular and working people in general, “For this critical election, seniors came through to give working people an alternative in California.”
