Judge Permits Alex Sanchez to Speak

Federal Judge Dale Fischer ruled today that Alex Sanchez can travel this weekend to speak in San Francisco at the opening of a Culture Clash play about his life and times.

Prosecution objections - that Sanchez violates his parole by speaking out for Salvador's gang truce - seemed to fade as the judge considered the request to attend and speak at the opening of "Placas."

The ruling is significant because of its implied endorsement of Sanchez' assistance to a 160-day truce in El Salvador between 18th Street and MS-13. Sanchez long-distance involvement in the Salvadoran truce closely resembles the role for which he was indicted in 2006. The court decision also weakens the prosecution's original claim claim that Sanchez should be denied bail as a "flight risk" or "danger" to his community.

The play will be performed nationally during the next several months, bringing the Sanchez story to a national audience.
