The trial was launched after investigators found human bones in wells in the Cizre area, believed to be the remains of the people killed by the illegal structure established by Temizöz.
Spc. Sgt. Burhanettin Kıyak, who used the codename Yavuz as part of Temizöz's illegal operations, was detained in Ankara this week and flown to Diyarbakır, where the investigation is under way. He was arrested on charges of several counts of murder. Kıyak is being accused of running the death squad -- which interrogated and executed its mostly Kurdish victims -- set up by Temizöz.
The Diyarbakır 6th High Criminal Court is hearing the trial. Suspects include Col. Temizöz and Cizre's former Mayor Kamil Atağ, who also worked as a village guard, meaning he was armed by the state to fight Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists, and several former members of the PKK who later started working for the Turkish gendarmerie as informants. The mechanism through which this happened, however, was not legitimate or official.
