Syria's Uprising Descends into Civil War

As Syria enters its 16th month of a popular uprising which has killed an estimated 10,000 people, reports of civilian massacres mark an escalation of violence some observers believe has now developed into a civil war. A U.N. report found that 108 civilians were killed, including 49 children and 34 women, in an attack that began on May 25 in the village of Houla, northwest of the city of Homs. Another massacre on June 6 that killed 49 was reported in the town of Qubeir, also near Homs. Human rights groups assert that the heavy bombardment of population centers in opposition strongholds continue across Syria.
