It’s been two years since the blowout and explosion on British Petroleum’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico that led to the deaths of 11 crew members and the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Although much of the oil that washed ashore along 600 miles of Gulf shoreline is no longer visible, the long-term damage from the uncontrolled spill of 4.9 million barrels of oil over three months is unknown. It may take decades for researchers and scientists to understand the full impact of the oil spill on human health and the Gulf’s marine life and ecosystem. Story continues
