Nonprofit news site Voice of OC reports that a 29 year old electrician Huy Pham, committed suicide after being laid off from the City of Costa Mesa.
http://www.voiceofoc.org/countywide/county_government/article_bb2d33ba-5119-11e0-b488-001cc4c03286.html Pham was one of over 200 city workers laid off as part of a massive outsourcing effort by the City. The goal was to fire employees and hire contractors to do the same jobs.
The point - perhaps the Costa Mesa Republican majority on the City Council wanted to make a little ruckus to support Scott Walker of Wisconsin, who spearheaded the effort to strip state workers of their union's right to bargain collectively.
