After Historic Repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell Policy," Pentagon Must Now Certify Implementation Plan

Seventeen years after the Clinton administration imposed the Pentagon's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which barred gays and lesbians from serving openly in the U.S. military, Congress has repealed the measure. In a closely watched debate on Dec. 18, the U.S. Senate overcame the threat of a Republican filibuster and passed the repeal measure by a 65 to 31 vote. Gay rights activists and their allies around the country compared the historic vote to President Truman's ending of racial segregation in the U.S. military in 1948.
