U.S. Election 2012- Stewart Alexander: Obama Fails Job Report

by Stephen Clarke Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010 at 6:30 PM

Socialists nationwide have sharply criticized this latest round of welfare for the rich, extending the Bush tax cuts, by holding hostage the nation’s unemployed, only to provide for their most basic needs. Alexander says “The nation’s wealthiest elite have gotten their tax breaks extended; they have gotten their bailouts, now President Obama must demand that corporate America deliver on the jobs that have been subsidized by the U.S. government.”

In 2008, President Barack Obama was campaigning on a promise to create jobs and putting Americans back to work; now, as the president approaches the end of his second year in office, Presidential Candidate Stewart Alexander says President Obama has failed on his commitment to the unemployed and working class people.

The most recent job report was bad news for President Obama and the nation. The nation’s unemployment lines got longer and the report by the U.S. Labor Department showed the nation’s unemployment rate jumped to 9.8 percent. According to the Labor Department, there are presently more than 15 million unemployed workers nationwide and approximately 6.3 million people have been out of work for more than six months.

In an article written in The Washington Times, “The unemployment rate is stuck at 10 percent. If calculations include Americans who aren’t in the labor force because they stopped looking for work or were forced to take part-time jobs, the unemployment rate has been above 17 percent since September. The Obama administration promised that the incredibly costly stimulus package would keep unemployment down to 8.1 percent, but the result of so much spending has been more job losses – and Americans are angry.”

Stewart Alexander says the real number of unemployed workers is much worse than what is being reported; “When taking into account individuals that have given up, individuals taking temporary employment, seniors being forced to live on meager retirement incomes due to the lack of jobs and college grads living at home, the numbers of unemployed workers is well above 22 million.”

Without a plan to create jobs, President Obama and Congress are in a position to continue extending unemployment benefits; and last week, the president compromised with Republicans to pass a tax bill that included a provision that extended unemployment for millions of out-of-work Americans for another 13 months. The tax bill was signed by the president this week.

Stewart Alexander has announced that he will seek the presidential nomination of the Socialist Party USA and the Green Party of the United States. Presently, Alexander is the only announced presidential candidate for the SPUSA and Green Party. President Barack Obama will likely seek a second term in 2012.
