Statistics released by the U.S. Census Bureau in September found that the percentage of Americans living below the poverty line in 2009 was the highest in 15 years at 14.3 percent. Forty-four million, or one of every seven Americans was classified as poor, the highest level in 51 years. The increase in the poverty rate was highest for children, with one in five below the official poverty line.
