aviation security

As the annual assembly of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) meets this week, I would like to raise another urgent aviation security issue.

Air passengers and commerce globally depend on aviation security. Taiwan has long served a vital role to international civil aviation. The Taipei Flight Information Region, managed by Taiwan, is central to air transport in East Asia, with over 34 million passengers, 1 million flights and 14 million tons of cargo pass through it annually.

Despite Taiwan's importance as an aviation hub, the island's continued exclusion from activities of the ICAO undermines efforts to ensure air safety and creates a gap in the global aviation safety network.

We urge ICAO to invite Taiwan to participate in its meetings so as to plug the hole and advance the efficiency and safety of air travel globally.
