Youth for Human Rights Florida Promotes Human Rights Education across the Globe

by Chad Andro Tuesday, Apr. 13, 2010 at 8:08 PM

St. Petersburg, Florida - Youth for Human Rights of Florida announced its participation in this year’s Sunscreen Film Festival in St. Petersburg Florida on April 14th to 18th by launching a petition signing for the teaching of the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration for Human Rights in alignment with the ongoing Seventh Annual Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) World Tour.

“We want to align our activities with the Seventh annual World Tour by Youth for Human Rights International which is completing the its 15-country tour in Mexico this week”, said Dustin MaGahee, president of the YHR Florida chapter. “If human rights are not taught in schools and practiced by citizens we will experience incidents such as the over 300,000 children who are forced to serve as soldiers by government and non-government groups in more than 30 conflicts worldwide,” he continued.

This year, YHRI is focusing on the theme of the United Nations “International Year of Youth”. In each country, YHRI president and founder Dr. Mary Shuttleworth meets with heads of state, leaders and educators to create support for widespread education of human rights throughout the countries’ educational systems.

The world tour was launched in New York on February 16th at the Manhattanville College by a distinguished human rights educational panel featuring Mr. Osagie Okoruwa, of Youth for Human Rights Nigeria, and Dr. Daniel Nanjira, former Kenyan Ambassador and now Professor of History at the college.

After participating in last year’s YHRI Summit on Human Rights in Geneva, Youth for Human Rights of Florida organized and led a human rights walk in December 2009 involving thousands of people from countries across the globe who have united from their common bond of bringing more awareness to the fact that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was created so the atrocities of World War II will never happen again.

"I was inspired to start YHRI by the words of humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard who said 'human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream.' By traveling to the far corners of the world and meeting with like-minded people, groups and organizations, and working in collaboration, I believe we can truly make human rights a reality." Dr. Shuttleworth said.

The term “human rights” refers to the rights and privileges that every person in the world should expect to receive as part of being human. To find out more about your rights visit: www.youthforhumanrights.org
