April 23 Friday 2:45pm - 4:45pm, Newport Beach: "Baker Boys: Inside the Surge" at the Newport Beach Film Festival. This documentary was filmed over 90 straight days with a forward combat Army unit in Iraq carrying out the counterinsurgency known as The Surge, which was the shift from 'shock & awe' to 'hearts & minds'. The film presents the most honest and intimate portrait of the modern American soldier ever captured on film. Screening followed by Q&A with the commanding officer of Baker Company.
Veteran war cameraman Jon Steele lived for 3 months with the soldiers of the U.S. Army's Baker Company and had unfettered access to their duties as the Iraq war strategy shifted from "Shock & Awe" to "Hearts & Minds". The Hearts & Minds consisted of these battle hardened soldiers becoming social workers, and community builders and, most alarming, paying millions of dollars in bribes to Sunni shiekh's to not fight! All of this is captured in an intimate and compelling story that ends with their homecoming and then months later the soldiers dealing with their PTSD which is as devastating as anything they endured in Iraq.
The commanding officer of Baker Company, Captain Rich Thompson, will be on hand immediately following the film for a Q&A with the audience.
