5th PAROL PARADE IN HISTORIC FILIPINOTOWN, A SUCCESS

Los Angeles—“ MALIGAYANG PASKO! FELIZ NAVIDAD!

There were fewer people because of the windy and cold weather but less than 200 Filipino-Americans led by Burlington School Kids and parents with SIPA youths with senior citizens and parents, braved the cold and wintry night to hold the 5th Historic Filipinotown Parol Parade last night, December 22, 2009

A vintage World War II jeepney of the Pilipino Workers Center (PWC) lead the parade from FACLA Compound. The parade started at 5:00 PM. Parols, big and small were abundant and were carried by the participants who took one lane of Temple Street.

Festive Crowd

The participants sung Christmas carols in Tagalog and English while the drivers honked their horns in delight. Audience along the route cheered the parade.

After a 45 minute parade, the participants gathered at FACLA Social Hall for the awarding of prizes for the traditional parol making contest. Historic Filipinotown Neighborhood Council President Cecille Ramos and Leo Pandac of PAADP gave away the prizes with David Rockello, Parol Festival Director.

The parade was supposed to be held last December 11 but was cancelled due to the stormy weather. Three Pacific storms hit California that week.

Instead an early Christmas party with Consul General Bernardo of the Philippine Consulate and Ryan Carpio of DC 13 as guests was held at the Burlington School. The parade was rescheduled on December 22, 2009 at FACLA.

The Parol Parade, a traditional Filipino festivies is a project of the Historic Filipinotown Neighborhood Council (HFNC) and is supported by People’s CORE, JFAV, EPCC, SIPA, Burlington School, FACLA, DC 13, PWC-SC, RVNC and GEPENC.
