Activists Outraged by Event Sponsored by Last Chance for Animals (LCA)

In the past week, Last Chance for Animals (LCA) has traveled down the path of trouble. LCA is promoting and sponsoring an event titled “D Cups Saving Tea Cups” taking place at a local Los Angeles “humane pet store”, Bark N’ Bitches. This controversial event has many radicals, including anarchists, ecofeminists and animal rights activists calling this “more distasteful than campaigns and advertisements pushed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA)”.

The advertisement bears the image of a Chihuahua sitting with a lacy blue bra on top of white fur. Such an image has raised many questions about LCA’s commitments to the animals.

“I’m confused why a group would choose to destroy their reputation by sponsoring something that would contradict their standing against fur,” stated Alice McKenna, an activist and women’s therapy counselor. “It’s pathetic to see them using women as objects in order to extort money from others.”

Activists claim Bark’s event degrades and represses women and contradicts the message of liberation. In addition, they state the event reduces women to body parts rather than individuals, comparable to the dissociation of animals’ body parts by the meat industry, fur trade, and other examples of exploitation.

“It’s extremely inconsistent,” Michelle Gonzales, long time vegan and women’s studies major, asserted over a phone interview, “LCA should be embarrassed to sponsor such an offensive event.”

Bark N’ Bitches will be celebrating their one-thousandth dog re-homed on Wednesday November 11, 2009 with a silent and live auction and raffle, including cocktails and appetizers.

Activists are calling for “people who really care about animals and women” to boycott this event. Rumors of disruption or a protest against “D cups Saving Tea Cups” has spread on Internet forums, but cannot confirmed at this time.

Chris DeRose, President of LCA, was unavailable to comment on the event or advertisement.
