http://www.crystallake.name/twork/19sep09/19sep09.php People who live in Southern California and have traveled up Highway 39 to the East Fork road to play in the water during the heat of the Summer will have noticed the unbelievable amounts of litter and heaps of garbage down in the river. Many families might also have been subjected to violence and threats by people illegally living and mining along the river and were drive back to their vehicles out of fear.
With the Forest closed, the USFS, fire fighters, and volunteers have been afforded the opportunity to go in to that section of the river safely to collect, bag, and haul a mountain of garbage in an effort to restore the East Fork and the San Gabriel River to a healthy and safe environment suitable for families once again.
On Saturday the clean-up effort was begun with average every-day citizens volunteering their time and sweat working to re-establish the region for every-day recreation.
The URL provided offers a description of the clean-up effort along with some photographs.
Comments about the effort to restore the San Gabriel River to family recreational use is greatly encouraged. There is a window at the bottom of the web page where people can post comments, and feedback to the volunteers is greatly appreciated.
