115 signatures in 4 hours at farmers market

Saturday morning farmers market + 4 hours = 115 signatures on CCI Petition to legalize marijuana

Download CCI PetitionSaturday morning farmers market + 4 hours = 115 signatures on CCI Petition to legalize marijuana

I arrived at the Saturday morning farmers market that is held in the back parking lot of Country Club shopping center a few minutes before 8 AM and set up my ironing board to go to work. In a few minutes I was asked to leave by a person identifying herself as manager of the event. I politely declined but offered to move if that would help. She said no and after a brief discussion about constitutional rights she left to call security.

When security arrived I calmly explained that because the market was freely open to the general public I had a right to be there to circulate a petition for a ballot initiative that had been approved by the Attorney General and I would not leave until I was done. Soon security left to call the Sheriff.

When three armed Sheriff's officers showed up I again stood my ground and after a bit they agreed I was right except that the ironing board had to go. Reluctantly, I agreed to put the ironing board away, however now a small crowd had gathered around the commotion and as soon as the officers left several crowded around to sign my petitions!

After I folded up my ironing board and put it in my truck I grabbed a couple clipboards and returned to the marketplace. Despite the disruption and handicap of being limited these two clipboards I collected 115 signatures in 4 hours this morning and had a rollicking good time doing it.

A Flawed initiative

by No more taxes Sunday, Sep. 20, 2009 at 4:35 PM

While we should all fully support the complete legalization of all so called, "controlled substances". We should also totally reject the taxation of any product or transaction.

This initiative is flawed, in that it also calls for the taxation of marijuana by the state. I would rather see the laws stay as is than pay any more taxes to the state.

The state has no right to tax anyone or anything ever!

State's Right to Tax

by mous Monday, Sep. 21, 2009 at 6:59 PM

You have to abolish the state to abolish its right to tax.

Taxes are part of the "deal" when you have a government. You have to pay for the government to exist, and that payment is levied as tax.

If a gang controls your area, they may "tax" the local underground economy.

If you operate a business in a city, they can levy a tax on your business to pay for civic services. Your option is to do business elsewhere.

If you live in a state, they'll make a claim on your economic activity to pay for state services. Same for a country - they charge taxes to pay for war, customs agents, border patrol, etc.

Even voluntary social groups, be they anarchist, socialist, communist, or church groups, require that people pay some kind of membership fee, to pay for services rendered. (People should consider donating to the IMC via the box on the left.)

The more modern and technological cities, and countries, tend to have the highest taxes. The least modern, most primitive places tend to have the least taxes.

Consider the taxes in the USA, the most capitalist country. The highest tax rate is 38%.

Now, consider communist Vietnam. They are straight out communists, gloat over beating the US in the 70s, and study Lenin. Their highest tax rate is 40%.

Americans gripe about communism and socialism and high taxes... but by and large, the political system has little to do with taxes. The main determinant seems to be the degree of modernity -- more modern societies have higher taxes, but, these modern governments also provide more services.

Medical and Personal Use Not taxed

Medical and Personal...

The proposal would tax COMMERCIAL SALES. Personal use grown and shared among friends with no money involved would not be taxed. Medical use within a co-op or collective would not be taxed either. Commercial sales to adults 21 and up would be taxed at $50 per ounce. Don't want to pay the tax? Grow it yourself, get it from a friend for free or get a doctors note and join a co-op or collective. Of course in Oakland you will still have to pay the additional tax on medical cannabis they just passed, on top of the state sales tax that is already charged on all medical cannabis.
