People's Assembly for Popular Education & Liberation: Summer School Program Update

by Martin Sunday, Jul. 05, 2009 at 4:31 PM

With LAUSD cuts to summer school programs already in effect, a community of activists, teachers, parents and concerned citizens have held summer school for grades K-12 in front of LAUSD's Administrative Headquarters at 333 South Beaudry Street. While attendance was small, and kept that way for symbolic purposes, we are ready to move to a different location, one that will accommodate more students and parents. But we need your help!

I have, for the past couple of days, shown up at 5:30AM to 333 South Beaudry Avenue to set up our humble administrative office to ensure that our sidewalk classroom is available for any student wanting to stop by and learn a few things. Since last Thursday, we have had a students stop by from every grade level, including adults, to participate in this symbolic demonstration of will power and commitment to protecting the future of our children by offering them the education they deserve. Now that we have become a familiar sight to many of the personnel employed at LAUSD headquarters, it’s time to relocate our efforts to a bigger facility where we can begin the process of teaching many of the students who have been left locked inside their homes, as we have come to learn, by their parents for fear that something may happen to them in their parents' absence. We want to be able to provide parents with the option of sending their kids to the our summer program, but we need your help.

As such, we are calling on all community and education rights activists to begin an massive outreach effort to find the most willing and qualified teachers, as well as students and parents, to start attending our summer program.

This Sunday, July 5th, at 12PM, we will be having a General Assembly meeting in front of the Beaudry Building to start discussing curriculum, schedules and most importantly, to discuss and determine the location where we expect to hold our first class en masse. If you want to be part of the planning, please attend. If not, don’t worry. So long as you let me know by email at clase@madrigalproductions.com that you are interested in teaching or volunteering or dropping off your child, we will be sending you a form to fill out with your preferred teaching interest or volunteer service. That form must be filled out as soon as possible so we can come up with a schedule of classes for more advanced students to select what they wish to learn. Elementary school children will be taught all day, with teachers specializing in different subjects coming in at different hours of the day to teach them in specific blocks of time. This is still a work in progress, which is why we need people to come by to discuss this further and come up with a plan of action that will work best for our students.

On a separate note, I have attached (hopefully) a few photos of some of our teachers in action. As you can see, we may not have had kids lined up on the street. But what we had was incredible and a great new beginning. With your help, I know we can make a difference and begin what I hope will some day be a movement worth teaching about some day in the not so distant future – a movement that you will all be remembered as founding members.

Thanks for the support. And remember to check your emails Sunday night with a full report. In the meantime, pick up your phones, call parents and teachers and let them know what is coming over the horizon so they can start preparing to change a single life.

Faithfully yours, in solidarity and struggle.
