This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio Netherlands, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
From CHINA- The Second World Buddhist Forum was held in China and Taiwan with the theme of "A Harmonious World." China was admitted into the Inter-American Development Bank, strengthening economic ties between China and Latin America. The Russian and US Presidents met prior to the G20 summit and agreed to make far-reaching cuts in nuclear arms. Russian President Medvedev has called for creating a new international currency system. The German Chancellor Merkel and French President Sarkosy said they are speaking with a single voice, demanding more regulation in the US financial market. France announced that it rejects any form of Tibet independence. Tens of thousands of citizens were protesting economic policies in the streets of European cities over the weekend. The US administration has pledged to work with other nations to take action on climate change. The Afghan Supreme Court has extended the presidency of Hamid Karsai until a new election in August.
From NETHERLANDS- Radio Netherlands has eliminated shortwave broadcasts to North America. The decision is based on their surveys that find very few listeners in N America. If you ever listen to RN on shortwave, please let them know- by email to

The Netherlands hosted an international conference on Afghanistan this week. President Hamid Karsai is trying to push through a new law that will greatly reduce the rights of women in the country. A Dutch reporter finds that many of the Afghan fighters described as Taleban are just citizens trying to defend themselves in the face of attack.
From CUBA- There were more deaths in Pakistan over the weekend from US operated drones, bringing the total to 340 since last August. A Spanish Court has launched a criminal investigation into those administrating the use of torture at Guantanamo Bay Prison. The Latin American Caribbean Economic System called for an end to the US financial blockade of Cuba. Venezuelan President Chavez called for the creation of "Petro Currency" to replace the US dollar in international trade.
From RUSSIA- Hugo Chavez says he will take the new currency plans to China next month. An analysis of President Obama's first international diplomatic journey.
