Russia Backs Away from Kaliningrad Missile Plans

Russia's de-escalation should prompt the offloading of US Cold Warriors who have had their day.

The Kremlin showed Wednesday the first signs of de-escalation of a political conflict with Washington over a planned missile shield system. Moscow is backing away from plans to station missiles in Kaliningrad following overtures from the Obama administration, which has said it would review plans to install parts of the system in Poland and the Czech Republic.

A Russian Iskander: The country says it is backing away from its plan to deploy missiles in Kaliningrad.

If you build a missile shield in Eastern Europe, we will respond by stationing missiles in Kaliningrad: That's been the response of Russia up until now to the former US President George W. Bush's plans to build a missile shield system with installations in Poland and the Czech Republic.

A little more than a week after President Barack Obama's inauguration, however, a senior Russian military official said Moscow is backing away from its plan to station Iskander missiles in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, which borders European Union member states Poland and Lithuania.."
