Attacks
At
least 20 Palestinians killed Monday; 900+ in ongoing assault
The death toll in Gaza rose to 20 on Monday when Israeli fighter jets
continued shelling targets throughout Jabaliya Refugee Camp into the early
evening. A Palestinian paramedic was killed while evacuating the
wounded of an earlier strike soon after an Israeli jet fired a missile that
scored a direct hit on his ambulance, which exploded.

U.S.
arms shipment to Israel canceled due to Gaza conflict
13 Jan 2009 A U.S. military plan to ship munitions from a Greek port to
a U.S. stockpile in Israel has been canceled due to the conflict in the Gaza
Strip, the Pentagon said on Monday. The United States Navy's Military
Sealift Command issued a tender on December 31st for a ship to deliver 325
standard 20-foot containers of ammunition on two separate journeys from the
Greek port of Astakos to the Israeli port of Ashdod in mid-to-late January.

Guantanamo
Bay Prisoners Could Be Arraigned Before Inauguration Day 13 Jan
2009 The suspected 'Sept. 11 conspirators' held at the Guantanamo Bay prison
could be arraigned the day before Inauguration Day, sources tell FOX News,
even though President-elect Barack Obama is planning to order the facility
shut down. This means some prisoners could enter guilty pleas the day before
Obama is sworn into the office and two days before the president-elect is
expected to issue an executive order shutting down Guantanamo.
Synagogues
attacked across France --Unidentified attackers hurl petrol bombs
at Jewish places of worship in Paris, eastern France. 12 Jan 2009 Vandals
hurled petrol bombs at Jewish places of worship in Paris and eastern France
on Sunday night, the latest of a string of anti-Semitic attacks since the
start of Israel's Gaza offensive. In the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis, the
local synagogue was attacked with two petrol bombs as the rabbi was inside,
sparking a fire in the next-door cafeteria, the local prefecture said.
Israel
accused of Gaza 'genocide' 14 Jan 2009 The president of the UN
General Assembly has condemned Israel's killings of Palestinians in its Gaza
offensive as "genocide". Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann also told Al
Jazeera he had never believed that the UN Security Council would be able to
stop the violence in Gaza and that Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister,
had practically told the UN to "mind their own business" by
continuing the offensive.
'I think that Gaza is now being used as a test laboratory
for new weapons.' Israel
testing 'extremely nasty' weapon: Norwegian doctors 13 Jan 2009
Israel is testing a new "extremely nasty" type of weapon in Gaza,
two medics charged as they returned home to Norway on Monday after spending
10 days working at a hospital in the war-torn Palestinian territory.
"There’s a very strong suspicion I think that Gaza is now being used
as a test laboratory for new weapons," Mads Gilbert told reporters at
Oslo’s Gardermoen airport, commenting on the kinds of injuries he and his
colleague Erik Fosse had seen while working at the Al Shifa Hospital in
Gaza.
Israeli
leader warns Hamas of 'iron fist' 12 Jan 2009 Israeli troops
advanced into Gaza suburbs for the first time early Tuesday, residents said,
hours after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned Islamic militants of an
"iron fist" unless they agree to Israel's terms to end the
fighting. Hamas showed no signs of wavering, however, with its leader,
Ismail Haniyeh, saying the militants were "closer to victory."
Hill
of Shame where Gaza bombing is spectator sport --A beauty spot
has turned into a vantage point for viewing of Israel's bombardment of the
Gaza Strip 13 Jan 2009 In times of peace Parash Hill is a beauty spot where
Israelis from the nearby town of Sderot come to picnic and enjoy the
magnificent view across a nature reserve and bright green fields to distant
Gaza City and, beyond, the deep blue Mediterranean. There are benches for
sightseers, a swing, a sculpture of a man on horseback and fences to stop
children tumbling down the steep northern slope. Today the hill attracts a
very different sort of visitor -- the ghoulish and vengeful, the curious and
anguished, not to mention television crews. They come not to enjoy the
flowers or birdsong, but for a spectacular panoramic view of Israel's
relentless bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
Israel
launches new attacks against Gaza from air, ground and sea 13 Jan
2009 Israel launched new attacks against the Gaza city early Tuesday from
air, ground and sea, and large sound of explosions was heard. The Israeli
forces attacked Gaza backed by artillery and helicopters. Some witnesses
said that a batch of Israeli special forces advanced into the southern Gaza
city and exchanged fire with Palestinian militants.
IDF
officer critically hurt in Gaza; 6 other soldiers also wounded 13
Jan 2009 An Israel Defense Forces officer was critically wounded Tuesday in
Gaza, as Israeli ground troops battled Palestinian militants in the streets
of a densely populated Gaza City neighborhood.
Hamas
leader boosts morale of bombarded Gazans 13 Jan 2009 The leader
of Hamas in the Gaza Strip vowed on Monday the Palestinian resistance,
backed by the population, would emerge victorious over Israel's offensive.
"We are approaching victory," Ismail Haniya, the prime minister of
the Hamas government in Gaza, said in his broadcast from an undisclosed
location. "I tell you that after 17 days of this foolish war, Gaza has
not been broken and Gaza will not fall."
Ten
Israeli soldiers choose jail over Gaza 12 Jan 2009 At least ten
soldiers have opted for prison terms rather than going through with their
deployment. The refusals would be the first of their kind since Israel
launched its massive air, sea and ground assault on the Gaza Strip. On
"conscience’s grounds," the soldiers refused orders to head to
the Gaza Strip, they said.
Olmert
call 'behind US abstention' 13 Jan 2009 Ehud Olmert, the Israeli
prime minister, has said a last-minute telephone call to George Bush forced
the US to abstain in a crucial UN vote on the Gaza war. In a speech late on
Monday, Olmert said Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, was left
"pretty shamed" at the vote and had to abstain on a resolution she
had personally arranged.

Ashkelon.

IS GAZA A TESTING GROUND FOR EXPERIMENTAL WEAPONS?
By Jonathan Cook, The Electronic Intifada, 13 January 2009
Concerns about Israel's use of non-conventional and experimental weapons in
the Gaza Strip are growing, with evasive comments from spokesmen and
reluctance to allow independent journalists inside the tiny enclave only
fueling speculation. The most prominent controversy is over the use of
shells containing white phosphorus, which causes horrific burns when it
comes into contact with skin. Jonathan Cook reports.

HOW DOES ONE PREPARE FOR A WAR CRIME?
By Maha Mehanna, Live from Palestine, 13 January 2009
Since the start of the Israeli offensive on Gaza, Israeli warplanes have
been bombing and shelling several locations in the area near our house, very
near our house. With each bombardment, we feel our house shake like an
earthquake and windows break, not to mention our utter fear and horror. Maha
Mehanna writes from the besieged Gaza Strip.

On 7 January, as Spanish human rights advocate and documentary filmmaker,

man shot earlier by invading Israeli forces, we were also shot at as the
medics carried the body towards the ambulance. It was in Dawwar Zimmo,
eastern Jabaliya, near the area which has been occupied by Israeli soldiers
since the land invasion began. Eva Bartlett writes from the besieged Gaza

GAZA SEWAGE LAGOONS COULD COLLAPSE
Report, The Electronic Intifada, 13 January 2009
JERUSALEM (IRIN) - The Palestinian Water Authority (PWA) is concerned that
waste water lagoons in the northern Gaza Strip could collapse due to the
current fighting between Israel and Hamas. "With Israel's latest
bombardment, there is a real risk that earth retention walls of a number of
wastewater lagoons will break, releasing an estimated three million cubic
meters of wastewater into the surrounding communities," said Shaddad
Attili, head of the PWA, in a statement on 12 January.

PALESTINE : OPINION/EDITORIAL:
BLUEPRINT FOR GAZA ATTACK WAS LONG PLANNED
By Jonathan Cook, The Electronic Intifada, 12 January 2009
As Israel rejected the terms of the proposed United Nations ceasefire at the
weekend, Israeli military analysts were speculating on the nature of the
next stage of the attack on Gaza, or the "third phase" of the
fighting as it is being referred to. Having struck thousands of targets from
the air in the first phase, followed by a ground invasion that saw troops
push into much of Gaza, a third phase would involve a significant expansion
of these operations. Jonathan Cook analyzes.

ISRAELIS RAIN PHOSPHOROUS BOMBS OVER GAZA
By Mel Frykberg, The Electronic Intifada, 12 January 2009
RAMALLAH, occupied West Bank (IPS) - "There is no doubt that Israel is
using phosphorous bombs over Gaza. Israel is flagrantly violating the Fourth
Geneva Convention," says Raji Sourani, head of the Palestinian Centre
for Human Rights (PCHR) in Gaza. "This is not the first time we have
documented Israel using this kind of prohibited weapon against Gaza's
civilian population," Sourani told IPS on phone from Gaza.

Actions Against Israeli War & Massacre Around the World
(1) ACT NOW: Are you tired of a biased media coverage?
Demonstrate Fri, Jan 16 4:00 pm
Washington Post 1150 15th Street NW
(between L and M Sts.) Washington, D.C.
Metro to Farragut North or McPherson Square
Everyone should bring at least one issue of the
Washington Post multiple copies if you can literally dump
them on the Post's doorstep as we denounce their biased
pro-Israeli coverage of the massacre in Gaza and their
complete whiteout of protest activities in the United
States, including last Saturday's march of tens of thousands
of people.
|
|
The Washington Post refuses to cover the demonstrations of
thousands of people protesting the massacre in Gaza. Many thousands of local
residents, especially from the Arab-American and Muslim community, have
demonstrated on Dec. 30, Jan. 2 and last weekend on Jan. 10 in a mass march
in Washington, D.C. Not one article in the Washington Post about these
demonstrations!
The Washington Post is an expression of anti-Arab racism and bigotry.
How could the Post ignore the National March on Washington?
The Post has barely covered the hundreds of thousands of people who have
taken to the streets to say no to the war in Gaza. They completely ignored
the largest demonstration that took place on Saturday, January 10 that
involved tens of thousands of people who had traveled by bus from the
Midwest, East Coast and South, and who had come out in huge numbers from the
DC Metropolitan Area. The Washington Post claims to pride itself on its
extensive "local" coverage, yet the massive mobilization that has
take place largely in the Arab and Muslim community locally is apparently
invisible to them.
This Friday, January 16 will be the 21st day of the Israeli war in Gaza. By
that time, well over 1,000 Palestinian people will have been killed, and
many thousands more wounded. This massacre must end now! Be at the
Washington Post office (1150 15th Street NW, between L and M Sts.) at 4:00
pm to make your voice heard.
This demonstration is initiated by the ANSWER Coalition, Muslim American
Society Freedom, National Council of Arab Americans and others.

(2) NO IMMUNITY FOR GAZA WAR CRIMES!
Rally and Pack The Courts!
Friday, 1/16/2009 @ 11:30 am, Foley Square
In a case particularly relevant to the current crisis, the Center for
Constitutional Rights (CCR) will be arguing the appeal of Matar v.
Dichter next Friday in Manhattan. Please come out in support!
Just before midnight on July 22, 2002, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)
dropped a one-ton bomb on a residential apartment building in Gaza
City. The aerial bomb killed 15 people, including 8 children and
injured more than 150 people. Avi Dichter, former Director of Israel's
General Security Service, planned and directed this "targeted"
assassination with the knowledge that civilians would be killed. The
case, filed by the CCR in 2005, was dismissed in 2007 because,
according to the Israeli government, Dichter was acting in the course
of his official duties and therefore immune from liability. The appeal
is being heard next Friday, January 16 (details below). For more
information on the case, see CCR's factsheet
(www.ccrjustice.org/files/1.8.09

Health and human rights in the Palestinian West Bank and Gaza
Palestine is split geographically into the West Bank and the Gaza strip.
Gaza is the most densely populated area on earth: after first being crippled
by blockade of its borders since 2007, Gaza is currently being bombed by the
Israeli armed forces.1
Unlike Gaza, the West Bank does not threaten Israel with missiles, but
nevertheless suffers widespread erosions of human rights which we witnessed
on a fact-finding tour in November, 2008.
Restriction of movement due to the separation barrier and checkpoints,
combined with the need for travel permits, delay access to hospitals for
both patients and health workers. We saw 33-week-old triplets delayed for
over 5 h while awaiting permits and finally transferred without their
parents, and heard of hospital workers' commuting times increasing from 30
min to more than 2*5 h after the closure to them of nearby checkpoints. At
the medical schools we heard of the immense difficulties staff and students
face as a result of the paralysing restrictions on travel between
institutions in the Occupied Territories.
The total blockade of Gaza meant our entry there was denied, as it has
been
for humanitarian workers and essential food, energy, and medical supplies
since the closure of the border in early November. We heard from Physicians
for Human Rights-Israel, of the reduction in exit permits being granted for
treatment outside Gaza, and of the practice of denying exit to some patients
unless they collaborate with the security service in intelligence gathering.
We saw how the Palestinians' opportunities to make a living are being
eroded, both by illegal Israeli settlements on their farmland and by
discrimination against their industry.
Violence continues at all levels: we spoke with schoolchildren, injured in
stone-throwing attacks by Israeli children occurring while Israeli soldiers
looked on. Children as young as 12 years are prosecuted in the Israeli
military courts. The most common charge against children in the military
courts is for stone-throwing, which under military law carries a maximum
penalty of 20 years.
Our experience in the West Bank caused us grave concerns, which have been
realised more rapidly and deva-statingly than any of us could have
anticipated, in the current dispro-portionate attacks by Israeli forces on
Gaza. Our personal insight into this includes the attack by the Israeli navy
on the boat Dignity when underway to provide emergency health care to Gaza,
and which was carrying a member of our tour group.
This report is for our colleagues around the world who might be unaware of
the deliberate erosion of human rights in both the West Bank and Gaza. We
suggest that, in view of the failure of other measures to influence those in
power, serious consideration be given to targeted academic and trade
boycotts.
We declare that we have no conflict of interest.

(4) The Grand Hotel Intercontinental cancels the Israeli Tourism Fair
Confronted with the indignation expressed by so many people in France
and abroad who had heard about the scheduled Israeli Tourism Fair in this
great Parisian hotel, the management of this establishment has made the
decision to cancel this event, which was supposed to open on January 15.
The hotel's management, as the Paris police prefecture
has confirmed to us, has indicated that it has disinvited the 50 Israeli
exhibitors who had planned to present their tourism products.
We express our profound appreciation for all the
individuals and associations in France and abroad that made the effort to
express their arguments to the hotel management, arguments that were
certainly taken into account in the decision to cancel the event. We also
thank the management of the hotel for this decision, and we stress that
commercial relations and all other interactions should be guided by basic
ethical rules.
As long as Israel makes martyrs of an entire people in
order to annex their lands, defying all international conventions as well as
the most fundamental human rights, we must avoid any acts that would turn us
into accomplices.
Holding an Israeli tourism fare would have been
especially obscene while the Israeli army continues its massacres in the
Gaza Strip. But it is the web of relations and collaboration with Israel
which we have the moral duty to freeze, as long as there is a continuation
of the occupation and enslavement of a whole people, deprived of liberty for
more than 60 years.
Together, we have not only the duty but also the power
to reject the impunity enjoyed for so long by Israeli state terrorism.
Impunity which encourages it to increase the violence carried out against
Palestinian men, women and children, and to multiply, here in France,
provocative actions such as the benefit galas for the Israeli army and the
attacks by the thugs of Betar or the JDL (Jewish Defence League) who last
week wounded two students of the Janson de Sailly high school.
Please stay mobilized ! At the present time we are
publishing information almost by the hour on our site http://www.europalestine.com.
That is how we announced the entry, yesterday, into Gaza of a surgical
mission led by Prof. Christophe Oberlin, and we praise the courage of the
French, Greek, German and Egyptian specialists who have broken the siege in
order to aid the wounded.

(5) Trains, trams, the tube stop for 2 minutes in Norway
From the Stop the War Coalition in the UK:
The Norwegian Locomotive Drivers Union has shown what trade unions in Britain
should be doing now: taking action in support of the Palestinians in Gaza.
On Thursday 8 January all trains in the whole of Norway, and all trams and
subways in Oslo, stood still for two minutes in protest against the Israeli
invasion. The union issued the following information for passengers: Because
of the situation in the Gaza Strip, the Locomotive Drivers Union in Norway
has decided to demonstrate our solidarity with the Palestinian people. This
will be organised by adding two more minutes of stoppage at the station. The
same action applies to all passenger trains in Norway simultaneously. We
demand the immediate withdrawal of all Israeli troops from the Palestinian
territory. Thank you for your understanding.
There are also some South African trade unions considering carrying forward
this campaign.
