In 1981 the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring an International Day of Peace:
"Declares that the International Day of Peace shall henceforth be observed as a day of global duration of the Day...“Invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, and non-governmental organizations and individuals to commemorate, in an appropriate manner, the International Day of Peace, including through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in the establishment of global ceasefire.”
“As the guns fall silent, we should use this opportunity to ponder the price we all pay due to conflict. And we should resolve to vigorously pursue ways to make permanent this day’s pause. On this International Day, let us promise to make peace not just a priority, but a passion. Let us pledge to do more, wherever we are in whatever way we can, to make every day a day of peace. “

Subject: Day of Peace Prayer Vigil 9/21: 6:00-6:30 p.m.
Dear Imam Siddiqui,
I am writing to you on behalf of the La Verne Church of the Brethren. As you may know, on September 21, we will be celebrating the International Day of Prayer for Peace. We (along with one or two other local congregations) plan to hold a prayer vigil in La Verne at 6pm that will lead to discussions of how to promote peace both in the Middle East and in the Pomona Valley.
We would be honored if you would participate as the featured speaker... perhaps you could say some words about the causes of violence and lead the group in prayers and/or Quranic recitation--whatever you feel would be appropriate. Time is short and we have invited others to participate. We hope you could share for 3-5 minutes and then lead the group in prayers. I hope that you are able to join us.
