New Long Beach Coalition Formed

Long Beach- The Long Beach Coalition for Good Jobs and A Healthy Community was formally formed in a meeting last Monday, August 11,2008 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Long Beach after three months of existence.

Attended by more than thirty community leaders, academics, volunteers and union organizers, the Coalition reviewed the actions that the group have undertaken since its first meeting last June and decided formally to form the Long Beach Coalition. Their primary aim is to consolidate their efforts and strengthen the group.

The multi-ethnic coalition is composed of Latinos, African-Americans, Filipino-Americans and Asian Pacific Islanders. Some of the members of the coalition are members of the clergy, Filipino World War II veterans, students, academicians, community organizations, community leaders, union organizers and low-waged workers.

The Coalition held its first mass action by supporting the confrontation between the Hilton Hotel workers and the hotel management last June 30. Then on July 1st, the group testified before the Long Beach City Council to support the workers demand to organize their union without the hotel interference.

Then, on July 10, more than 6,000 workers and their supporters marched to the Long Beach pier-park from the Hilton Hotel in downtown Long Beach.They held an hour-long rally at the Long Beach Light House to dramatize their demands.
