Police raid at Ramona Gardens- video and info-2/29

by police brutality Sunday, Mar. 02, 2008 at 12:34 PM

Police raid at Ramona Gardens 2/29

On Friday February 29, 2008 five members of my family were arrested without cause. This video ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=CxQs93lkFME ) documents the first arrest and the police unlawfully entering my grandmothers home. The videographer for this video, my aunt, was also arrested . In total five members of my family were taken in (3 uncles and 2 aunts). Two of my uncles, after being handcuffed, were taken to a secluded location where they were beaten. The police tried to provoke them to fight back during this beating. After hearing about this I went to the Hollenback Police station to check on the status of my family. I was told to go back to the projects by officer Villaneda (badge #33642). He then proceeded to tell me that I watch too much TV. Sergeant Provincio also explained that my family has been an issue with them for years. I suspect that this comment is connected to my family's involvement in activism against police brutality that began when my uncle was killed in 1989 by police. When I tried to communicate to police officers by further explaining my role in working with at-risk youth to create job opportunities and the potential for enrollment in college and some of the programs I've been involved with in Ramona Gardens, officer Provincio proceeded to tell me I was a hypocrite because I didn't directly involve the police in my efforts.

Just last year Mauricio Cornejo, a resident of Ramona Gardens, was beaten and taken into custody by officers from the Hollenback Division where he died as a result of his injuries. Members of my family, including my father, have been active at meetings to address the situation and spoken publicly against the excessive police presence in Ramona Gardens and their tactics. The following is a link to an LA Times article about this incident:

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/me-newgang3,0,4365438.story?page=1

As many of you know these issues are central to my work. I am concerned for the safety of my family as well as the community of Ramona Gardens. I am currently trying to gather as much information as possible. The following is a list of my family members that were arrested and what they were charged with. Police have not given any compelling reason as to why they entered my grandmothers residence to begin with.

Yolanda Galindo (videographer), Charged with Resisting Arrest Gloria Galindo, Charged with interfering with a police officer Edward Galindo, Charged with interfering with a police officer Moses Galindo, Charged with making criminal threats Elvis Galindo (man in video being arrested), Charged with making criminal threats

Our family is currently seeking legal counsel. If anyone has any information about potential lawyers please contact me via my mobile phone at (310) 384-0224.

You can also help by contacting Councilman Jose Huizar in the 14th Council District and expressing your thoughts about this incident. The following is his contact information:

200 N. Spring Street, Room 465 Los Angeles, CA 90012 Phone: (213) 473-7014 Fax: (213) 847-0680 councilmember.huizar@lacity.org

You are going to have to do better

by Sgt. York Monday, Mar. 03, 2008 at 7:21 PM

There is nothing in that video that backs up anything that you are saying. I hope you have more evidence than a vid with a bunch of mouthy women talking smack about things they do not know about to the cops.

Yet another educated "peace" officer conveys his disdain for the community

by Inner Cities Under Siege Wednesday, Mar. 05, 2008 at 5:25 PM

The people will be the judge whether LAPD (Hollenbeck Division) used abusive force without probable cause. It's time that all communities come together and fight police brutality and stop this police state now.

Need Some Clarification

by mous Friday, Mar. 07, 2008 at 12:39 AM

I need some clarification. Was the dude being arrested a gang member?

If so, then his arrest might be legal under the gang injunction, which i think is being applied here.

On the other hand, I don't know if the cops entering the house is allowed under this gang injunction.

Also, there's the larger issue of the legality of gang injunctions. They target people for appearing to be in a gang, even when they are not. This is racial profiling.

That said, I still find it personally difficult to be sympathetic to people who join gangs. Gangs do a lot of negative, violent things that fuck up a neighborhood.

If gangs weren't busy shooting each other and selling drugs, the cops would barely be around.

Of course, cops really don't do anything to abate the existence of gangs. that's a bigger issue.

Fight Back!!!!

by Marego st. res. Thursday, Mar. 13, 2008 at 6:58 PM

i think the people of or neighborhood need to fight back! We need to come together and start an organization to prove that the Hollenbeck Division is abusing their power and to prevent these horrible thing from happening. i am sick of hearing of our family members being arrested and beaten by law enforcement. I already lost an uncle Feb. '07, and it pained me to see him at his funeral with his nose broken and face still bruised from the beatings that was caused by the people who are supposed to be protecting us. They aren't protecting us, if anything they are killing us, and invading our homes without warrants. as i said before we all need to come together and fight back as a community. The more there is of us that are willing to stand tall and speak up, the faster we will have justice in our beautiful community.

I guess you didn't know that outside your meaningless little world in the government assisted housing projects (read: our constant reminder of people who exist with the help our tax dollars) people actually like cops and denounce criminals. If you were attempting to get sympathy with your video footage, it's not working. Sorry. Viva la Raza!! Stop embarassing your race!! Those cops were nothing but courteous and professional. Fight Back?

by Concerned Citizen Friday, Mar. 14, 2008 at 12:54 AM

You should put your time and energy in FIGHTING BACK against the gangbangers, grug dealers and career criminals who are making life in Ramona Gardens this way. I have family (law abiding) in RG. It makes me sick when I hear that the local gangmembers (Big Hazard) and their deep rooted (supporting) families become enraged when the police do their job and attempt to take control of the gangs grip on the community. The 10% of the residence (Big Hazard gangmembers and their supporting families) are the problem. The other 90% of law abiding citizens are constantly being intimidated and victimized by the gang or as they should be called "Domestic Terrorists". Cops have a tough job. They are not the problem. The gang and their support group is the problem. Take that away and problem solved.

Good for you i was born and raised in these projects and when my friend Gerard Hernandez was shot and killed there i witnessed cops laughing and joking and one said "we did it" and taunted these gang members, i wish i had a camera. These cops are out of control, and then you wonder why LAPD and LA Sheriff are joke of the world in law enforcement.

revolt!

by justme Friday, Mar. 14, 2008 at 2:28 PM

Well, you know what type of boys join the LAPD, the uneducated and the ignorant. It's easier for them to do as they are told. A bunch of losers who need a badge to terrorize communities under a guise to protect and to serve, what a joke. Label anybody they don't like as a gangmember and do anything at will. Urban Terrorists, with city halls approval.

It's time everyone, it's time to revolt against this gang called the LAPD, as I leave this note LAPD has shot and killed a boy yesterday in RG and huizar finally came out of hiding to speak out (joke). It took a killing to bring him out, but two days prior to this incident a meeting was held concerning police brutality, yet he was a no show. Vote these people out! Villaraigosa, Huizar, and Bratton. Put the pressure on them, make them EARN their paychecks, all communities need to come together, LAPD is not here to protect us, this has been going on for decades, it's time to stand up to these losers. Do not give up your rights, they are NOT above the law.

I have watched the video. Now if Elvis is on probation or or Parole he can be searched even the residence he resides in. But if he is not then it is an illegal search. Now the Galindos does have a bad reputation in the projects. They all have not been saints. Hopefully this all works out for you guys ($$$).

Why don't you speak the truth! You are getting your home searched because you are most likely part of the problem that keeps the "thug-life" mentality alive in the projects? How many college graduates emerge from Ramona Gardens compared to the countless low-life gang-members? Parents, raise your kids proper and they will never be in trouble with the LAW! Remember, if you lay down with dogs, you catch fleas!!!

How about letting councilman Huizar know of the low income people who pay 30-50 bucks for monthly rent in Hazard projects. Now its ok if the people are really low income, but when housing authority helps your kids to get jobs with them (plumbers, carpenters and you know driving the little yellow housing car around the pj's. Those guys are from Hazard make 20-30 bucks and hour and live with their girfriends (baby mama) who pays 20 bucks for rent. They drive their cars and used the money to dress nice imnstead of moving out and buying a house. Oh yeah don't forget the welfare the baby mama gets from the goverment. Not that many people know that of the pj's. People in the pj's grow up and respect your parents who came to this country to have a better life for you and make something with your lives. Now to the 3rd genation families there, get a live and don't get mad went your families get stop for being on Parole. Now if you make it out, make sure you help your families get out and don't come back. Be like Jose Navarro (chia) who did good in school. But don't come back and defend the gangters like he is. (family are veteranos)

That last bit of 'information' sounds like the police and law & order type of justification for selective enforcement. Oh well, it's a job. One that serves selected interests.
Anarchists might have a point, here, about government at the point of a gun.

So are you saying it is not true of people working in the pj's for housing authority and living with their baby mama's collecting welfare and paying 20 bucks for rent (what they make an hour). That's funny cause I know that it has been going on for about 15 years. 3rd generation families getting welfare and wic, grow up people. Do something with your lives. Whatare you guys going to do when the goverment tears down the pj's. Nothing, get your kids to do good in school and to get a great education instead of having them grow up in the gangter mentality.

I am not in law. I gree up in RG for 21 years. I moved out 10 years ago, with my family and haven't looked back. I got my family out of there. Cause I was able to understand my family moved here for a better life and better dreams for us. Fortunately for them I was able to folloew the straight line and not joing the gang. People ask me where did i grow up at, and I tell them. People respond how did the ganglife not drag me in. I explain to them the gang is there, you join if you want there is no pressure from the gangsters to join. I'm just saying I was able to stay out of it, so the people who stay there have a choice and to me, even though there parents don't say it, are a dissapointment. So as you can see I know of the people who take advantage of the goverment.

gangs are a response

by Police State News Monday, Mar. 17, 2008 at 12:16 PM

Doesn't the counselor/cop growinthehood know that secret societies or gangs exist in times of oppression and surveillance?
As a response to being exploited by a class of Libertines and their goon squad enforces?

A society divided by radical wealth disparity and racist selective law enforcement.
No vision. No analysis and no insight. Just dogma from the ruling overclass and their busy propaganda agents, who may have a bit of a more generous helping of crumbs from the table to parrot apologies for rule.
Bugger off, policedog.

I 've never been picked on by anybody, cause someone knew better to not pick on me, plus like I said the you are not pressured to be in the gang, you join if you wanted to. Secondly if you want to stay living in the pj's all your live, instead of being proud that you may it out snd you own your own home, that's all up you. Now give you your props for what, being able to hold a car wash and not really give the family all the money. I've you read my comments correctly, I grew up there and I know how it is.

Yes u are right, if u get held up, an anarchist most likely he will not help you...
but why not, we pay anarchist to protect the public right? Oh wait no, I might be mistaken, I think we might pay cops to protect and serve the public. Now Mr meatless potato, I need you to pay attention. If we pay police to protect and serve, but they fail to do so , then "come on everyone say it with me" they are the criminals. Because they refuse to do their job. Now I can understand why a police officer will mess around harass people, they are only human, but if thats the case I propose we need real officers, officers who dont get all butt hurt cuz people dont like them. You know what the sad thing is, if we found cops who didnt get their feelings hurt and just did their job, the world, dare I say it would be 100 percent perfect. Now I know this might be a harsh reality for you, but this isnt "The Hills" in the real world bad things happen. Nigga and Brains are not Synonymous

by Meat and Potatoes Tuesday, Mar. 18, 2008 at 2:04 PM

You stated in a previous posting that this should not be an attack on you because it was about cops. How ironic that for you to get your distilled message across, the first thing you do is revert to your own moros nonsense. I never stated that cops were perfect or infallible. Perhaps you know a handful of perfect individuals who would opt for carreers in law enforcement? Maybe someone in you circle of influence would care to re-write police policies and proceedures everywhere? Let's hand-out "we are the world" flyers to everyone like you and eradicate crime by simply holding hands in a big circle jerk... Talk the talk, but you obviously won't walk the walk. If you had the "brains", you would rally on the side of Law and Order...St Thomas Aquinas once stated "law enforcement without the force is impotent" A perfect society does not exist , but lawlessness only makes a bad situation worse. There are jails for those who break the law, be they cops or criminals. Since you like the path of insult versus civil discourse, I bet you got "edumakated" at UCLA on an athletic scholarship. Was it football or basketball?

So by ur rational, any abuse of law enforcement no matter how corrupt should be tolerated. Meat and potato Im gonna try to open ur eyes here to something grand. Do you think maybe, just maybe, law enforcement just might be a small part of economic leverage. After all, law enforcement stops drugs from being sold in our ghettos, but not to our ghettos. And who the F*ck gave anyone the right to write my laws for the benefit of their own financial gain, thats right, I said it! this is probably the truest thing you'll ever hear!!! A perfect society does not exist, but that does not give us the right to close our eyes fall asleep and become cattle. We can NOT become lazy and stray away from our perfect society, we learn from mistakes and make it better for EVERYONE, NO EXCEPTIONS Everyone is equally important, Ur houses might be bigger and ur daddy might have more money, but ur just products of ur environment, ur nothing special, just like all of us.

BTW I didn't make the basketball team, and now I am in debt

The people will always find ways to exist inside any system, be it beneficial or oppressive. We find ways to adapt and persevere despite the racism, classism and brutal tactics the upper echelons of command are told to employ by their political masters who, never seem to incur the wrath of justice if a few of their indoctrinated goons get busted for outrageous criminal actions.
Gangs, as I stated before are a direct response to oppression and naturally are the subject of much interests by the enforcement arms. Infiltration and standard Co-Intell methods, as well as the habit the CIA has of importing both cocaine and weapons to these factions, serve to play into selective enforcement SOP.
And the lower level cops either play along or get garbage detail and are singled out for reprisal.
Get real.
The subject populations have minimal influence to police policy.
Aside from the LAPD being the most corrupt police in the nation.

knew it...

by Police State News Wednesday, Mar. 19, 2008 at 3:59 PM

so this pretend homy is another cop posing as just another citizen.
Does that ell you anything about the cops?
"FYI, I now protect and serve the same community I grew up in, which is more than I can say for the rest of you social tards.."
And that statement alone tells the direction this particular cop would selectively enforce.
They sure have airs about themselves. As if they are uber citizens
Better than the rest of us 'cause their paymaster has deeper pockets for them to 'serve and protect'.

interesting point here

by Police State News Wednesday, Mar. 19, 2008 at 4:34 PM

"There are more guns in the hands of criminals in this city than in most of the gunstores located here[1]. How blinded you are to the reality that exists around you[2]. Anarchists have a point? Give them a call when you get robbed at gunpoint![3] I'm sure they will help you out...."[4]
[1]
Damn right since the BATF has eliminated 90% of the gun stores in their current purge of lawful gun shops.
[2]
That is subject to events in which I'm correct and you're incorrect.
[3]
Try it, anyone. I dare you. Settle your affairs first.
[4] Certainly more rapidly and with less BS and overtime pay while you individuals are robbing the citizens of their constitutional rights under the color of law while pretending to solve crime.
Have you read the Bill of Rights?
Try it when you have a few minutes.

Sounds like you need to put down the martinis or take another zoloft. Here's an idea for you, write something that actually makes any sense, or has any real social significance. I hope you write more mumbo-jumbo to prove to the readers on this forum how absurd you're thought processes are. What have you done lately to help the condition of any community to improve? I don't think "cop hater" qualifies you as any kind of expert. keep on hating....

what was that, Officer. Oinkers?

by -pop- Tuesday, Mar. 25, 2008 at 5:07 PM

I don't have any problems with professional law enforcement which acts within constitutional parameters.
It's the over roided pigs that I have a problem with. Think you can fuck with everyone just because you have a gun and a badge?
Think again.

By the way, it sounds like you are the only one "posing" here. "Selective enforcement"? Engage your brain before you state your opinion.Do your homework and don't be afraid to learn about this particular community. I work an assigned geographical area where less than 10% of the population creates more than 90% of the problems. Yes, this does mean that my target audience is specific or "selective". Hope I don't burst your bubble, but I don't mess with the law abiding folks, I only target the parasites. And, yes, I do get paid for what I do. Some call it a job or a career. "Homie", don't hate the player, hate the game...

Dude, what correctional facility did you slither-out from? Did spelling the word "Oinker" hurt your small cockroach sized brain? Don't be mad cause you got arrested, and had to post bail after you had your "constitutional rights" "violated"... 'if you can't do the time, don't do the crime'...

I am not in law.-

then....

-I work an assigned geographical area where less than 10% of the population creates more than 90% of the problems.-

No it’s the liars and corrupt police who believe they’re better than the other citizens who are the 'problems'.

And your insipid sarcasm is unable to address any of the points I brought up. The cops are in need of a leash.

"real social significance"

by Police State News Wednesday, Mar. 26, 2008 at 3:35 AM

Why not allow the entire population access to any weapon of their choice and disband the majority of police who can't qualify past the IQ test scores?
That would be nice.
I would call that a solution of Real social significance.

fuck the boys in blue!

its pretty fucked up to feel unsafe when u see a "so called ''to protect and to serve officer'' .But for the most sad part of it, to see how scared our own kids, young teenagers, boys and girls get! Instead of being the role model. and sopposed to makes us feel protected &
Make the community feel safen and not worry bout walking outside and my little boy watch an officer kill a youngman for no reason to for all that, then have the officers still lie and say they were only doing their job yet no weapon was found on the victom still but they assumed he probably had a gun so they just went ahead and shoot before they get shot at my kids get scared every time they see a cop car thats something that shouldnt be that way

There's waiting lists to get into public housing, and some people are cramming extra residents in there, subletting and scamming the system. Just get a real apartment, you leeches, and let some real poor people live in there.

If you grew up there and say you knew everyone, why dont you state your name? I grew up there too and got out of there but i still go by and i remember what it was like growing up there and how the cops treated people. Gerard did get out of there and he was doing better, but do you know why he stuck around that night for SNOOPS, who was killed by cops. I was there in the hospital when Gerard got shot i SEEN the cops laughing and talking shit. Why dont you talk about that instead of talking about how we get "summer jobs" working with Lou, and how we are so spoiled because we get free lunches from Hazard park? Don't you think whiteboys from West LA take advantage of the system? Dont you think Jews from Encino cheat on their taxes and benefit from the govt? Just because a man gets some benefit from the govt gives the cops NO right to harrass and treat people the way they do. Now i dont like cops, but i respect them and i respect there job, but isnt supposed to go both ways?

Show some love to one another!!

by El Gordo Saturday, Jul. 25, 2009 at 9:49 AM

I imagine the amount of respect we show or lack of as displayed above towards each other is part of the problem. The fact that we can't even get along as Latinos' makes us a target for anyone to point the finger towards.

I don't like LAPD or cops just as much as the next person. But they have a job to do. Are they abusing their authority? maybe so. It depends who you ask and whether or not you’re the victim of a crime where the LAPD stepped in to assist or arrest.

I feel fortunate to have lived in the projects for 17 years of my life. I still visit from time to time because I have family who does not want to leave. My experiences there help shape who I am today. I remember a time when we had a swimming pool by the Gym; I remember we had a huge slide at the park above the Alley (Crusado Lane); I remember when we had a teen post to hang out in; fortunately the Gym is still there. I also remember when Mayor of Los Angeles Tom Bradley came to visit and his car got egged and the countless victims losing their lives along Lancaster to the drive by's including my little brother. Having met people from all over the world and the prejudices they have toward the low income families of East LA and any other barrio for that matter, I can only say it's a shame!! It's a shame we can't even get along after what we all have endured and the pictures that are portrayed to the bystanders.

Wise up my fellow Latinos' We are digging our own graves. I know the Galindo's very well. I grew up playing with them when they lived by the "Jungle". They're no angels, but they are a very tight family with a mom who will stand toe to toe. I admire them for that. Peace be with you all and please try and show some love and respect for each other. What happen to them plays out everyday. Put yourself in their shoes and lend a help in hand or prayer if you can.

Someday hopefully we can all say the Latinos' are a tight family. Then maybe we can work with the LAPD instead of against because they are not going anywhere.
