Tenants and Activists protest at City Hall against Slumlords, Gentrification- Call on Councilman Eric Garcetti to defend Rent Control
Tenants living in roach infested homes force landlord to make repairs. Now these tenants face eviction.
Los Angeles, CA, February 4, 2008@ 1:30pm 1st and Spring: Tenants from 4225 Lockwood Ave say their landlord wants them out because they are on Rent Control. For ten years landlord Alfredo Alvarado used intimidation to keep from making repairs. This is because of the low rent tenants paid for rent control. Because of tenants organizing and an anonymous tip the Health Department had to make repairs. Now the landlord is trying to evict families to collect double the rent to get rid of Rent Control families. Eric Garcetti has claimed to be supportive of tenants rights and Rent Control. The tenants plan to ask Garcetti to intervene on eviction case and give a statement on Rent Control. We anticipate thirty to forty people present.
