The world is edging closer to a new influenza pandemic than at any time since 1968. The last three influenza pandemics in 1918, 1957, and 1968, killed approximately 40 million, 2 million, and one million people worldwide, respectively. “The world is presently in phase three: a new influenza virus subtype is causing disease in humans, but is not yet spreading efficiently and sustainably among humans,” according to the World Health Organization (WHO).By Gene Koprowski, Editor-in-Chief
