Continue the Pressure on the Immigration Bill: Struggle Against Anti-Immigrant Backlash, Defend Immigrant Rights

Los Angeles-- As we vehemently oppose the US Border Protection and immigration Reform Bill that will turn 12 million immigrants into a permanent underclass of “guest workers” and scrap the family reunification laws the Coalition In Defense of immigrant Rights (CDIR) and the Echo Park Community Coalition (EPCC) take a stand to fight the anti-immigrant backlash that came with the debates on the U.S. Congress on the so called’ immigration reforms”

US Congress Debates Immigration Reform

In the U.S Congress, the LA Times reported, “ majority democrats have set for Thursday, June 7, a vote to limit the debate overriding republican objections. The republicans wanted more time for debates saying that “ immigration is a big complex, emotional matter” that required more debates, not less.”

“ Senior democratic and republican sad in the coming days, the two sides would probably reach an agreement known as as a unanimous consent decree on how much longer and how many amendments to debate.”

“ Senators defeated two of the four amendments Tuesday one of which is targeting the Z visa, giving illegal immigrant temporary status and then apply for legal permanent residency status, a step towards citizenship. The second amendment that did not come into vote was that would eliminate the bill’s requirement that program participants leave for a year after every two years of work. “

Clearly the debates show the public pressure on immigration bill persists. New mass actions are being slated these coming weeks. One of which is the immigrant rights rally in Los Angeles on June 24 at Hollywood and Vine.

Many senators and congresspersons, both republican and democrats oppose the proposal that "tears families apart” and the new point system that will be used to evaluate future legal immigrants would value family connections well below employment-related criteria.

The latest primary debates among democrats and republican presidential candidates in New Hampshire last June 2 and 5 also focused on the immigrant rights issue and the war in Iraq and Afghanistan

Meanwhile, immigrant scapegoating and anti immigrant tirades at the CNN with Lou Dobbs leading the charge and other media outlets went on a crescendo as the debates went on in the US

Congress.

As the U.S Congress debates, the fascist right wing groups have succeeded in forming 250 anti-immigrant racist groups of which 150 are armed and are considered threats against the minority groups. One particular group that has been active lately is the Minutemen led by Ted Hayes in California.

The Minutemen group have been active hounding the immigrant right protests in Los Angeles and other cities and have been taunting and provoking mainstream immigrant rights groups and their advocates.
