On Friday, outgoing Georgia Rep. Cynthia McKinney has filed articles of impeachment against President George W Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

McKinney charges that Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld manipulated intelligence and lied to justify war, and that Bush abused the Office of the Presidency by engaging in illegal domestic spying.

Now that the Democrats have taken control of both houses of the Congress, incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, has already made it clear that “impeachment is off the table” and warned members of her party not to go after impeachment. There are some Democrats who view impeachment as the wrong approach and a waste of effort despite that a recent Newsweek poll from October 24th showed that 51 percent of Americans would like to see Bush impeached.

This country has been deeply injured and Congress must act to start the healing process. As McKinney's final act as a public servant in last week in office, she has taken those steps to start that process by put impeachment back on the table. The question is, will other members of Congress have the courage to support the action or will her fellow party members continue to toe the party line, now that they are the ones in control of Congress?
