They say that the torture is effective

by Eduardo Galeano Saturday, Dec. 09, 2006 at 2:14 AM

7/12/2006 - They say that the torture is effective. But it has been applied massively to hundred of migliaia of persons in Algeria, Vietnam, Latin America, and it has not prevented neither the defeat of the French colonial power, neither the umiliazione of the North American imperial power, neither the fall of the Latin American military dictatorships.

Eduardo Galeano.
Eduardo Galeano

Eduardo Hughes Galeano (born September 3, 1940) is an Uruguayan journalist whose books have been translated into many languages. His works transcend orthodox genres, combining documentary, fiction, journalism, political analysis, and history. The author himself has denied that he is a historian: "I'm a writer obsessed with remembering, with remembering the past of America above all and above all that of Latin America, intimate land condemned to amnesia."

Eduardo Galeano

They say that the torture is effective. But one knows well, from the times of the Inquisizione Saint, than the confessions of the tortured one they are not credible, because the pain ago to say that that the torturatore wishes.

One of the more recent cases and detectors has been the confession of a head of to the al Qaeda, Ibn al Shaykh al-Libi, than under torture it confessed that Saddam Hussein was training its organization with crews biological chemistries and, and helped therefore Colin Powell to commit the largest gaffe of its career in the speech with which it announced the invasion of the Iraq.

They say that the torture is effective. But it has been applied massively to hundred of migliaia of persons in Algeria, Vietnam, Latin America, and it has not prevented neither the defeat of the French colonial power, neither the umiliazione of the North American imperial power, neither the fall of the Latin American military dictatorships.

They say that the torture is effective. But in Iraq Abu Ghraib solo is served to amettere in all its light and without a shadow of doubt to demonstrate the terrorism of the invaders. In it knows them where torture a system that practical the crime in order to undress countries removes the mask.

The bureaucrats of the pain, soldiers and police, are alone instruments of a power that has need of the torture in order to make sure itself and to extend its borders. Null of abnormal: an atrociously unjust system uses atrocious methods in order to last. Null of abnormal that the masters of the world not only practice the torture, but of it they preach the quality, “alternative means of coercion”, “intensive technique of interrogation”, or “tactics of pressure and intimidazione”.

That that us anguish is to state that in the world an increasing part of the public opinion applaude the torture, or at least the chip ax, when it is applied to presumed terrorist that they refuse to say that that they know or against possible delinquents that they threaten the emergency.

Us it seems scandalous who this horror comes admitted like practical more influential current and that the mass-media of it makes propaganda more and more openly. Inammissibile for we the crescent impunity of the torturatori, protect from the immunity agreements that the government of the United States imposes in order to put its agents and soldiers outside from the competence of whichever justice, universal premises or.

We believe is urgent to say to high voice that mentono those who says that the torture protegge the civil population. This machine that nutre of human meat is not acted in order to anytime put the innocents protected from the threats in ambush because, with its feracious treatments, can transform them in guilty.

Servants in order not protect but in order terrorizzare the population. Servants in order not to obtain information: practical in order to prevent rebellions, in order to punish heresies, in order to humiliate dignity and to seed the fear.

Torture is a key.
Turn the key.
Open the door to it and it means the state can celebrate its brutal intent and we as a subjugated population, tremble in fear because that is what torture is. Terrorism. Not intelligence. It's not about finding out anything.
They don't need to find out anything. They already have what they want and it is control of your body. To ply with as they see fit. To set as an example in some cases in public places or in the homes of family members. To allow such behavior is beastial. Only a savage and crude society could tolerate it.
