Democrats Urge Speaker Nunez to Return Money

The questionable $4 million Election Day contribution that Speaker Fabian Nunez received from the California Democratic Party immediately drew condemnation from good government activists, but now Democratic activists are wondering why grassroots contributions were refunded to a term-limited incumbent in a safe Democratic district.

As the AP reported, "one watchdog group questioned whether the arrangement was legal" but the greater concern for many Democratic partisans was whether the transaction did anything to further the Democratic Party in California.

The calculations conclude that the $4,000,000 could have invested $68,965 in a 58 county strategy of fighting everywhere as Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean has proven to be successful.

Or the money could have been used to the tune of $210,526 in each of the 19 incumbent Republican congressional seats to help Speaker Nancy Pelosi succeed in Washington, DC.

The money could have also funded a $97,560 investment into nine state senate and 32 state house seats the Republican Party will be defending in 2008.

Democratic activists are using the internet to closely follow developments in the scandal.
