From NETHERLANDS- In Mexico physical fighting erupted in Congress in the lead up to Friday's contested inauguration- and the newly appointed Interior Minister is aggravating the opposition. In Colombia, members of Congress have been charged with organizing and financing right-wing paramilitary groups. Bolivia President Evo Morales visited the Netherlands and met with Shell Oil to discuss taking over multinational shares in the Bolivian gas pipeline company.
From CUBA- Robert Gates, the nominee to replace Rumsfeld as US Secretary of Defense, suggested in 1985 that a bombing campaign be used to overthrow the Sandanista government of Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua. The EU has released a report stating that EU governments were aware of the CIA "extraordinary renditions" occurring in their territories, and obstructed investigations into these facts. A UN agency has reported that Israel planted antipersonnel land mines in Lebanon during the invasion this past summer.
From CHINA- The Iranian President blasted Geo Bush's foreign policy in a letter to the American people, calling for a withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. Negotiators have agreed to restart the 6 party talks about N Korea's nuclear development. Thailand's government has decided to lift martial law in most of the country. Kofi Annan, in one of his last addresses as head of the UN, said that all nations must reduce nuclear arms, saying that "mutually assured destruction" has been replaced by "mutually assured paralysis." NATO leaders ended their conference by agreeing to "stay the course" in Afghanistan, though many European countries refused to increase the number of troops sent.
From RUSSIA- US Senator Luger has suggested using NATO troops to ensure that Russia delivers gas and oil to Western Europe.
