ONTARIO - It was the homecoming San Dimas resident and father Peter Salcido feared most.
And it was a homecoming filled with mourning, hugs and tears.

A plane-side ceremony on Friday at Ontario International Airport met the body of Sgt. 1st Class Rudy Salcido, a 31-year-old California National Guard and La Puente native who died earlier this month in Iraq.

For the family members, the death of their hero didn't become a reality until they saw his casket.

"I'm still in denial," said wife, Jennifer, 29, before his body arrived. "I just want him home."

Salcido was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1114th Transportation Company. This was his third tour in Iraq.

The family waited in a private room before the 7:29 p.m. flight landed Friday. This was the first time they would see Salcido since he was deployed to Iraq in July, just three days after he married Jennifer.

The family laughed as they shared memories of Salcido, and cried at their loss.

"Rudy would always tell me, `Buck up, soldier,' " said mother Maybelle Luevano. "And he would probably tell me that now."

More than 15 family members walked out on the loading dock and watched the plane as the cargo door opened.

"I just want to see him," said Jennifer Salcido, who sobbed as her uncle and her mother held her in their arms.

The passengers of United Flight 1441 peered out the windows of the plane, which arrived from Denver, as soldiers unloaded the cargo from beneath.

Salcido, who relatives say loved his country, the Army, and his family, died Nov. 9 in Baghdad after an improvised explosive device detonated near his convoy vehicle, according to the Department of Defense.

"I just (want) everyone to know how much he loved our country," Luevano said.

Once the family got the cue, they approached the casket that sat between the plane, the hearse, and an assortment of federal and local government agencies.

Jennifer Salcido cried as she hugged the casket, draped with an American flag.

Peter Salcido touched the stars of the flag, a symbol that his son honored and respected.

"You feel his spirit," Peter Salcido said after touching the casket. "While it's only his body, you don't want to let go."

A mother’s sorrow

Funeral is Tuesday for soldier killed in Iraq

Tatiana Prophet November 20, 2006

VICTORVILLE — Sgt. 1st Class Rudy Salcido married his sweetheart in July, three days before going back to training for his deployment to Iraq.

That was the last time they saw each other.

“It was really important that he marry her just in case something happened,” said his mother, Victorville resident Maybelle Luevano.

Salcido, 31, was killed earlier this month when a bomb exploded underneath his c o nvoy i n Iraq.
His mother talked to him on the phone a few days before, and it almost seemed like he had a premonition.

“He kept telling me, ‘I can’t believe I miss her so much,’ ” said Luevano, who is getting ready to attend the funeral Tuesday in Riverside with her son’s wife, Jennifer, and the entire family. “He said, ‘I love her so much, mom. I didn’t miss her like this before, I miss her more now. It’s different.’ ”

Her son added that of course “I miss you guys too.”

The other sweetheart in Salcido’s life is his 14-yearold daughter, Gabriella. Cradling a beagle-bassett hound puppy named “Rudy” after her father, Gabriella was in Victorville with her mother, Doreen Helsley, Salcido’s exgirlfriend. The two moved to Colorado last year.

Gabriella was born when the two of them were only 17, but her parents always got along since then, said Helsley with tears in her eyes.

“I can’t even find the words,” she said. “He was a good man. He loved his daughter. He was always involved, even when he wasn’t there.”

Salcido used to love to ride the Sky Screamer with his daughter, asking the operator to stop the ride after one rotation if his daughter didn’t like it.

From Kuwait, he brought Gabriella a necklace with her name in Arabic on one side and English on the other.

“He was a great dad, he loved her more than anything,” Helsley said.

Salcido joined the U.S. Army in 2000, serving two tours in Kuwait as an ammunition specialist. After his release this spring, he volunteered for the California Air National Guard to go to Iraq, and he was reactivated in the Army as a heavy vehicle truck driver.

“He felt like he wasn’t doing enough, he had to go back,” Luevano said.

Growing up in La Puente and Ontario, Salcido used to play with his army toys in the backyard and blow them up with firecrackers.

His favorite holiday was the Fourth of July, his mother said.

“We could never miss a fireworks display,” she said.

Anyone who knew him knew that he loved to play Texas Hold ‘Em, but the things that were most important to him were God, family, his country, honor and commitment, his mother said.

Salcido is survived by his wife, Jennifer, daughter, Gabriella; mother, Maybelle and stepfather Anthony Luevano; father, Peter, and stepmother, Kathy Salcido; brothers Joey Luevano, Peter and Erik Salcido and sisters Monica, Angelique and Crysania; and nieces, Hailey, Daisy and Ivy, as well as his grandmother, Florence Mc-Cleary, and mother-in-law, Lisa Bleecker.

In lieu of flowers, Luevano would like donations to be made to any veterans’ cause, or to the Adelanto American Veteran’s Post 20, which burned in a fire in October. Donations may be sent to AMVETS Post 20 Rebuilding fund. P.O. Box 667, Adelanto, CA 92301.

Rest in peace warrior

by Stranger Friday, Dec. 15, 2006 at 7:42 PM

You stepped to the plate when your country called you and gave your life as a gift to all.....You sacrificed selflessly to give us what we have. What we have to think about is how to make your sacrifice count more...by being good neighbors to one another, love our countrymen and most of all reflect when times are bad. I am a stranger yet i weep for you like I lost a brother. I mourn for your family and hope that their pain subsides soon. I pray that all is forgiven and that you have closure.

Last but not least, Thank You for being you.
