Bombs Explode at Mexico City’s TRIFE, PRI and Scotia bank

Written by Daniel Maldonado Monday, 06 November 2006 Three simultaneous bombs exploded early a.m. in Mexico City and a fourth bomb was located and defused. The bombs did light damage to the Institutional Revolutionary Party’s (PRI) headquarters, the Federal Judicial Electoral Tribunal (TRIFE) building and a Scotia Bank branch. No injuries were reported. An unidentified caller notified the authorities that the bombs had been planted and were about to be detonated. The defused bomb was located at a second bank branch of Scotia bank. Sources close to the investigation told El Universal, a Mexican daily, that the bomb he defused was far more sophisticated than any he had seen in the past and appeared to be electronic. The bombs broke shattered windows and rocked doors and building but did little more damage than that. Mexico City's Public Safety Department stepped up security on public transportation, Los Pinos, the Mexican White house, and U.S. and British embassies. A concrete bust of former Mexican President Plutarco Elias Calles, founder of the PRI, was blown into small pieces of concrete. A PRI spokesman immediately said the bombs where likely the work of groups trying to destablise the government before President Elect Felipe Calderon can take office on Jan 1st, 07.
