Stewart Alexander will need many scientist, planners and engineers to build the California he envisions three hundred years into the future; however he puts little faith and confidence in the planning and engineering for the planned Liberty Quarry. The quarry has created heated debates with Riverside and San Diego County residents and Granite Construction executives.
The construction company is planning to open a 155 acre granite pit on 311 areas in Southwest Riverside County. The quarry will bring over 1,400 gravel trucks daily to the local communities and will impact the lives of over a half million locals and commuters.
For the region, the quarry will affect the lives of over two million Californians, the air quality, the environment, noise, traffic and the quality of life for Riverside and San Diego County residents.
The quarry will also impact important research at the 4,300 acre nature ecological reserve, operated by San Diego State University.
Executives of Granite Construction deny the claims of opponents insisting their plans will create the ideal situation for a managed open surface mine.
Stewart Alexander says the public needs to know the truth about Liberty Quarry. “It’s a situation where a new comer is telling you about your neighborhood, where you live and work everyday.” Stewart Alexander is a Candidate for California Lieutenant Governor.
Alexander is a resident of Murrieta and he works Temecula; he resides ten miles from the planned mine and is employed at the auto mall less than two miles from the planned site. Alexander is not an engineer however he says, “You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know this quarry is not right for the area.”
Alexander lives 14 miles west of Camp Pendleton and works 12 miles from the marine base and frequently at night he can hear the bombs during training exercises. Granite Construction executives insist the explosions at the mine will not disturb the local residents of Rainbow, Temecula, Fallbrook and Murrieta. The quarry will operate 20 hours daily.
Alexander says the communities of Temecula and Rainbow receives a strong breeze daily from the Pacific Ocean and the locals will be prime targets of the quarry’s dust, creating future respiratory and health issues for hundreds of thousands including thousands of students in the schools that are located directly downwind from the site. Also the pollution from the trucks will further destroy the air quality within the Temecula Murrieta Valley.
Alexander said when he moved to the area in 1999 drivers had to slow down just for a moment for traffic merging onto the I-15 and Hwy 79 North. Within the next two years the I-15 and the I-215 will be two giant parking lots; adding 1,400 trucks daily to this congestion will turn the traffic conditions into a nightmare.
Alexander says quarry officials have emphasized that the mine will have a low impact on the environment; however Alexander emphasized the mine will severely impact the ecology and area for more than ten thousand years.
