South Central Farmers: “Back in Action”

On Friday, August 18, a large vigil was held in front of the Disney Concert Hall at 111 S. Grand to draw attention to Councilperson Jan Perry and her role in the destruction at the South Central Farm and the removal of the farmers . The event, which lasted over two hours, was upbeat. Many people performed Azteca Danza in the large open space in front of Disney while the rest held signs and passed out leaflets to pedestrians and motorists. There appeared to be several dozen participants. (Although, others who were present recall the turnout being higher.)

The dancers, some of whom were said to be as young as four, drew favorable responses from passersby. “The South Central Farmers have started a danza group,” said Rosa. “We’ve been doing it for about two-to-three months. [There are] about 13 to 20 people. It’s a mix of farmers, supporters, and community members.”

Many of the protest signs focused on Jan Perry, while others imparted the farmers’ ongoing determination. One read “We are rooted” with roots forming the letters.

More demonstrations in that area are planned for the future. There are also two weekly vigils at the farm. Additionally, starting in September 24, the monthly Farmer’s Market will return. It will be held on the last Sunday of every month just outside the farm.
