Today the cost of living and college fees are forcing many college students, nationwide, to work longer hours to pay their way through college; and sometimes the additional work forces them to drop out. Now Stewart Alexander, Candidate for California Lieutenant Governor with the Peace and Freedom Party, want college students to be tax exempted for tips received in service related jobs; such as restaurants, food delivery, pet grooming, and other services where tips are traditionally paid.
State funding for higher education has eroded over the past 30 years and most students are receiving loans instead of grants. Many students are working in jobs that pay minimum wages and are working 20 hours or more weekly. Even if a student works additional hours the net income falls short of paying many expenses a student may incur, leaving little or nothing to pay for college expenses; therefore plunging many college students into a sea debt.
During the 60’s and 70’s many college students worked in restaurants and service related industries and made a decent income from the tips they received. Today many college students still depend on the extra income generated by tips to supplement their income; however the greater portion of that extra income is eroded away in state and federal taxes.
As California lieutenant governor Stewart Alexander would push for state and federal legislation to have college students tax exempted on all tips, state and federal. Alexander’s initial concerned would be for students in the State of California; however the same financial need exist for students nationwide.
Alexander believes this will help provided many college students the additional financial means necessary to cover expenses, to work less, and to concentrate on their education.
The Peace and Freedom Party’s platform backs free education through university level and Alexander believes this is possible. Alexander says, “Our priorities are misplaced; Governor Schwarzenegger wants to build two more prisons, I believe we need to build two more universities. Schwarzenegger wants to lock up our young people for life; I believe we need to insure that our youth will have the opportunity to receive a good education to prepare them for life.”
The tax exempt proposal that Alexander will introduce as California Lieutenant Governor, is a short term solution to help ease the financial burden for students attending California universities; Alexander is hoping to gain support nationwide for this proposal to help millions of college students that are struggling to obtain a college education.
