Más de cien mil granmenses participaron en el Acto Central Conmemorativo por el Aniversario 53 de los Asaltos a los Cuarteles Moncada y Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, en la Plaza de la Patria de Bayamo. La cadena nacional de radio y televisión, Cubavisión Internacional y Radio Habana Cuba transmitieron en vivo este importante acontecimiento. Al mismo tiempo celebramos también el 10 de Octubre, el 24 de Febrero y tantas otras fechas gloriosas que jalonan la historia de un pueblo que ni se rinde ni se vende. Donde comenzó a andar la nación cubana y nació nuestra Revolución, está y estará siempre Bayamo, ahora más hermosa que nunca, la primera capital, que los cubanos prefirieron reducir a cenizas antes que entregarla al enemigo. Mientras alzaban la tea incendiaria, nuestros abuelos proclamaban ayer, como nosotros hoy y nuestros hijos y nietos mañana, la consigna que sintetiza la vida de este pueblo: Independencia o Muerte.
