MEDINA, Ohio - A judge sentenced a former police chaplain to 15 years in prison for having sex with four girls since 2002.

Leonard Robertson, 46, pleaded guilty in April to 54 counts of sexual battery, two counts of gross sexual imposition and one count of attempted gross sexual imposition.

"This is sort of the poster child of patterns of abuse," Medina Common Pleas Judge Christopher Collier said Monday. "You don't get much more clear than this."

In November, the Medina Police Department learned of the allegations and dismissed Robertson from his position as chaplain, a volunteer post he held for about seven months.

Robertson also served for a time as an associate minister at Medina Alliance Fellowship, authorities said. He was leading Prepare the Way Community Church when he was arrested.

Robertson will have to register as a sexual predator after his release. He told the judge that he now knows he needs help.

"I struggle with whether I always knew it," Robertson said. "Given the chance, I know I would do the right thing."

Medina is about 30 miles south of Cleveland.

MEDINA -- A former minister and Medina Police chaplain will spend the next 15-years behind bars.
Leonard Robertson, 45, pleaded guilty to 57-counts of sexual battery and gross sexual imposition.

He's convicted of abusing four of his adopted daughters between 2002 and 2005.

Monday in court, the judge said that Robertson used his role as a father figure to manipulate the girls and believes that he could commit the same type of offense again.

"This is sort of the poster child of patterns of abuse," Medina Common Pleas Judge Christopher Collier said. "You don't get much more clear than this."

"I do not want to go put my family through any more harm, that's why I've chosen to go the route that I've gone," Robertson said. "And do my best to make up for what I've done to my family."

Even though Robertson pleaded guilty, he denies more than half of the counts.

When released, he must register as a sexual predator.

Ex-minister sentenced for sex abuse of kids

Medina - Common Pleas Judge Christopher Collier described Leonard Robertson as a man whom four young girls thought of as their savior.

He said Robertson, a former minister and police chaplain, took advantage of the girls' trust to sexually abuse them over three years.

Collier sentenced Robertson, 45, of Lafayette Township, to 15 years in prison on 57 sexual offenses, including sexual battery and gross sexual imposition.

County Prosecutor Dean Holman rebutted arguments by defense attorney Jay Milano that Robertson deserved a shorter prison sentence and the chance to be rehabilitated. Milano said Robertson is an alcoholic and was abused as a child.

Holman said Robertson's victims ranged in age from 12 to 17.

"He says he is saving these victims from the trauma of a trial, but these sex acts were persistent and consistent," Holman said. "These kids will bear the scars of this for the rest of their lives, and it will carry on into their children's lives. He should be punished."

The judge labeled Robertson a sexual predator. He will have to register his address with the sheriff every 90 days for the rest of his life after he gets out of prison.
