Run for their lives!

On May 21, 1981, Vol. Patsy O’Hara (INLA) and Vol.
Raymond McCreesh (IRA) died after 61 days on hunger
strike. The men were just two of ten political
prisoners that died for recognition of political
status and for the support of a free and united
Ireland.

On May 21, 2006, twenty-five years after the death of
these two martyrs, the Los Angeles chapter of the
Anarchist Black Cross Federation (LA-ABCF) will be
hosting the 5th Running Down the Walls. This event is
a 5k non-competitive run/jog/walk through the Whittier
Narrows Regional Park. The goal of this event is to
raise awareness and funds for the numerous political
prisoners currently locked up in the United States.
These are prisoners imprisoned for their participation
in liberation and social justice movements in North
America. Their status is distinct from social
prisoners because their imprisonment and sentencing
was due to their political involvement.

Because LA-ABCF is a grassroots political organization
we rely on donations to build and organize events to
raise the level of awareness around the issue of
political prisoners. There are a number of ways which
you can help make this event successful:

Participate in the 5k run. Each runner pays $12 to
register for the run.
Sponsor one or more of the runners directly and pay
their registration fees.
Volunteer during the day of the event
Help organize and outreach for the run
Make a donation to LA-ABCF.

All of the proceeds will be divided between the
Warchest program of the ABCF and a local community
project, Growing Healthy. The Warchest is a program
designed to send monthly checks to political prisoners
and Prisoners of War who have been receiving
insufficient or no financial support during their
imprisonment. The program was initiated in November
1994 and has raised over $43,000 since its inception.

The second program is a New Panther Vanguard sponsored
program known as Growing Healthy. It is an educational
gardening program at Normandie Avenue Elementary and
John Muir Middle Schools. The goal is to increase
long-term health outcomes by introducing student and
community participants to farm fresh produce, and
educating them about nutrition. It also teaches
sustainable organic farming skills that can be used at
home.

In the previous years, the LA-ABCF has had solidarity
runs in several cities and over seven US prisons,
including USP Leavenworth and Walpole State Prison.
This year, we have confirmed Solidarity runs in
Boston, MA, USP Atwater, Mound Correctional Facility
in Michigan, and two in Walpole State Prison. More
runs are soon to be announced.

Food, refreshments, and entertainment will be provided
on the day of the event for anyone who attends the
event. The ABCF wished to make this event as
successful as possible and can only achieve this with
your support. Show the political prisoners and
prisoners of War show you care by RUNNING DOWN THE
WALLS!
