Boffins, Buffoons and Intelligence Agencies

Paul O'Sullivan, Director-General ASIO, recently fielded questions after his public address at the Sydney Institute. In response to a question relating to the Cronulla race riots, the ASIO chief confirmed that extremism from any quarter (left or right) would attract the attention of our domestic watchdog. His answer prompted a memory recall of the most infamous failure of our domestic spy agencies, the Sydney Hilton Bombing of February ’78.

The Hilton Bombing was a fiasco of the first order, three dead and perpetrators still at large – the identity of the bomber/s remains a mystery to this day. All three spy agencies (ASIS, ASIO, ONA) and the local special branch were involved and all came up empty handed! Is this an acceptable outcome when regulators investigate regulators? It is now time the agencies resolved this matter to the satisfaction of the Australian public. Failure to resolve or address this most serious matter could result in a serious loss of credibility and public confidence.

If Paul O’Sullivan possesses the integrity required of one accepting that post he would not hesitate to rehabilitate the agency. However, if his is an appointment of (political) convenience then expect more of the same intrigue and corruption associated with the gross incompetence and ineptitudes of agencies like the American CIA and NSA, which local agencies are at pains (it would seem) to emulate.

The Hilton bombing was a failed attempt by local agencies to obtain increased funding and increase their relevance in a society that had little need for intrigue and spooks. The bomb was to have been ‘discovered’ in the ‘nick of time’ by agency personnel; jobs and missions would have been justified and greater recognition assured. However, the best of our local spooks forgot to check the garbage collection schedules. That oversight resulted in an unplanned detonation. The bomb exploded in the garbage truck compactor killing two garbagemen and one policeman on guard duty at the Hotel.

[Contrast the agencies past desperation with today’s leading role in society. A complete reversal of ‘fortune’ has occurred, should that provide cause for an investigation or should we accept the superimposition of a panic-stricken terrorist world full of bogeymen and demons? Is today’s reality an exercise in social engineering or an odd coincidence? There is no doubt that the interests of (international) conservatism have been served by recent ‘terrorist‘ activities. The Hilton bombing and 9/11 differ only in magnitude not intent or basic method.]

Such is the ‘intelligence’ and competence of Australian spy agencies. The case remains an indictment of these agencies and the NSW police – the bombers have never been officially identified. There was however, the usual attempted frame-up of a patsy cult (Ananda Marga) member, Tim Anderson, for the crime. Mr. Anderson was released after many years of appeals and delayed investigations, I would add that his cellmate at one time was the infamous (fallen) NSW Chief Stipendiary Magistrate, Murray Farquhar, who assisted Tim in his many appeals with invaluable legal advice. Farquhar’s involvement is an incredible coincidence as Farquhar had been a friend of this writer’s family since [my] early teen years. A family member had been in the employ of the now defunct NSW Attorney General’s Department for many years.

But to return to the clowns that call themselves ‘intelligence’ operatives and agents; third class liars and fifth rate ‘analysts’ the lot of them. Direct participation in the manufacture of blatant lies regarding WMDs in Iraq (aluminium cylinders for centrifuge use) and membership in the ‘coalition of willing’ (criminals) affords undeniable proof of the lack of integrity and criminal complicity of our security agencies. The pathological dependence of the Howard government on America has made a job in our spy agencies a breeze; America dictates policy and takes the flak while ‘we’ hold press conferences explaining how racist beach-goers warrant surveillance!

An unfortunate consequence of the loss of operational integrity is that criminal and nefarious groups are having a field day. In the age of political expediency, public welfare is a minor consideration. Organised criminals (drug barons, etc) have never had it so good; criminal empires are challenging the incomes of small nations, its open slather for organised crime, religious extremists and political opportunists. Large (criminal) organisations flushed with (almost) unlimited funds have recently merged with State institutions to deliver the social nightmare we live in today. When leading criminals vote, they vote conservative, it’s in their interests. And when political leaders make policy decisions and embark on whatever insane course, they do so at the behest of the criminal transnational organisations that have placed them in power.

During my teenage years I had occasion to witness many NSW police officers in various states of inebriation shooting their stupid mouths off and boasting about their highly illegal surveillance techniques and ‘other’ activities. In those days there was little distinction between the criminals and the police, it takes one to catch the other and in all fairness they were extremely effective in dealing with real (Croatian) terrorists and other criminals in the community. But ‘framing’ innocents (Anderson) is beyond the pale, both the police and criminals play their sordid games according to a type of code, each accepting various outcomes as part of the reality of their world.

I relate the above as a form of credential, familiarity with the (sordid) operations of the then special branch and various other squads combined with knowledge of the corrupt practices of the legal fraternity, provides an informed background for making comparisons with the agencies of today.

In order to test the efficiency of local spook agencies and prove a point, a small group of experienced specialists created a public web site dedicated to the exposure and elimination of lying, war-mongering right-wing, criminal regimes. The site had little trouble attracting material for publication; the present piece constitutes a good example. Submitted material and notice of publications was then e-mailed to appropriate government departments, tertiary institutions (ANU especially) and other centres/consultancies in the hope that the agencies were doing their job in monitoring electronic communications of known political specialists and other high profile personalities. After a considerable period elapsed, nothing, I would add that information from the ‘inside’ confirmed that no ‘hits’ had occurred.

After failing to attract the attention of ‘wombats incorporated’, we decided to e-mail a number of politicians directly; this strategy proved successful as one of the politicians, a senator, quickly alerted ASIO of some “ratbags” that may require surveillance. Success at last, but the procedure reminded me of rubbing a dog’s nose in its mess as part of a toilet training procedure.

After contact had been firmly established and the spooks had ample ‘shit on their noses’, we started tailoring material and observing the reactions. Sure enough, the chief of ASIO at that time, Dennis (bozzo) Richardson appeared on local television to announce that certain groups in Australia had adopted the “ideology of Bin Laden”, we were careful not to breach any existing laws, only the new totalitarian laws of Howard/Ruddock. We are not quite sure what the “ideology of Bin Laden” actually is and unfortunately bozzo Richardson has been shafted to Washington, so we may never know. But perhaps the new chief, Paul, might enlighten us!

Our group utilised known methods of textual analysis and various semiotic techniques, similar to those utilised to determine the anthrax letters originally issued from US government establishments.

Manipulating the attention and focus of ‘Australia’s best’ proved to be too easy, I am sorry to say; Australia’s best were/are left wanting, a pathetic bunch of incompetents. We challenge anyone to draw any similarity between Bin Laden’s Wahhabist philosophy and the material published on the site. Our little exercise proved beyond doubt that the agencies are under considerable pressure to arrive at certain conclusions and to favour a prescribed approach to ‘intelligence’ gathering and interpretation.

The net result of political interference in operationally independent organisations is structural compromise and eventual operational failure.

In conclusion, we would draw the reader’s attention to the spurious connection between the Hilton bombing and the 9/11 attacks. Nonetheless, the fundamental aims and methodologies of these unrelated attacks were almost exact and the parallels are too many to disregard. It is hoped that the common denominator of uninspired mindsets in intelligence organisations became apparent, leopards do not change their spots. This applies both locally and in the USA. The Hilton bombing stands as a constant reminder of the real face of Australian security agencies and the 9/11 fraud will soon be exposed for the heinous internal crime that it is.

We should also mention that similar exercises were applied to US agencies with the difference that they have not ceased nor are they as benign as those deployed in Australia. The result is that US agencies are screaming for our arrest and immediate transfer to suitable locations for interrogation. Notwithstanding information received from reliable sources, we confirm that all means will continue to be utilised for the dissemination of information designed to eliminate the greatest threat to world peace since Adolf Hitler – the ultra-right government of the murdering lunatic G W Bush.
